So you remember when Katy Perry was Mrs Brand? No? Well you’re not alone. Ellen DeGeneres forgot during an awkward chat on her chat show. It all went down during a cleverly named segment called: “Will you Perry me?” – a play on would you rather? In response to hearing the title Perry exclaimed:”Do I have to get married… again?!”.
DeGeneres, a seasoned host and interviewer, had obviously not done her research as she replied: “You were not married?” To make things worse, she just couldn’t bring herself to believe Perry so kept asking and asking until Perry, evidently uncomfortable, mumbled “his name was Russell Brand”.
Perry and Brand met in 2009 and got engaged that year on New Year’s Eve in India. They got married in October 2010 in a Hindu ceremony in Rajasthan. The pair went on to divorce a year later with Perry saying that the British comedian had ended the marriage via text message.
Brand recently opened up about his relationship with Perry, saying he thinks fondly of the I Kissed a Girl singer and blames the pressures of fame and busy work schedules for the collapse of their relationship.
I’m sure Ellen won’t make that faux pas again. Although there are a lot of couples whose union we have forgotten ever happened.
1. Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford
The Indiana Jones actor and super-model were married from 1991 to 1995. Crawford recently admitted that the age gap between the pair is what led to the split – she was 25 and he was 43.
2. Alanis Morrisette and Ryan Reynolds
Before Reynolds married Blake Liveley and littered the internet with their grossly adorable relationship, he was engaged to Ironic singer Alanis Morissette. The couple ended the engagement in 2007 after four years.
3. Jim Carrey & Renée Zellweger
The pair met on the set of Me, Myself and Irene and were engaged for only a year between 1999 and 2000.
4. Bradley Cooper & Jennifer Esposito
This was a very short marriage so you wouldn’t be blamed for not knowing. Cooper and Esposito stuck it out for a mere four months before calling it quits in 2006.
5. Angelina Jolie & Jonny Lee Miller
Before Brangelina there was… Jongelina? The Trainspotting actor and Jolie met while filming the hacking thriller with the inspired name, Hackers. They married in 1996 in Las Vegas and ended things three years later.
Clearly, there are a whole host of celebrity marriages which they would rather forget and we did indeed forget about. However, considering DeGeneres gave literally Katy Perry wedding gifts on TV, maybe she should have remembered…
