Terrorism is an epidemic in the modern world. As a result, any threats of bombs - no matter how small - are taken seriously by law enforcement.
Around 30 years ago, if somebody left a backpack on public transport or in a busy city center, one of two things would happen: Either a kind samaritan would hand it in to the local police station, or some chancer would steal everything of value and keep it for himself.
These days, however, unattended backpacks immediately cause mass panic, and local law enforcement quickly follow strict protocol in order to defuse a situation they have been alerted to.
This is why a backpack in Milwaukee was reported to police as a suspicious item after it was spotted on top of an electrical box.
This led to the bomb squad being called into the area to prevent a potential tragedy from unfolding.
However, a cyclist who was watching the situation grew fed up waiting for the bomb squad following protocol and deal with the backpack in an appropriate manner, and made the shocking decision to empty it himself.
Within moments, he was regretting that decision...
To see what happened when he opened up the backpack, check out the video below:
Needless to say, witnesses feared that he was "going to get blown up" when he approached the backpack.
"He rode past me and was saying, 'I'm going to defuse this situation'," a witness said. "I was concerned for everyone still around but really concerned for him. He was not acting in his right mind."
"If I would have saw him coming down the sidewalk earlier, I would have tried to stop him. It's a scary situation. You don't know if it's a bomb or backpack. When he went and did it, I thought oh no. It's not going to end well. It's going to end bad. (sic)"
Further information about the incident has yet to be released by Milwaukee Police.
