Describing women as “thick” is something that’s been around for a good while. Urban dictionary’s top entry for it dates back to 2002, and for those that don’t know, the definition reads: “Nice ass, nice legs, not skinny, with meat on your bones. Thickness is the s***”. They also give the example of: “Damn that girl is thick yo!”
Yet despite being around for a number of years, it’s had a resurgence in recent times. The internet often uses the phrase to compliment women with “meat” on their bones, and support women who have bodies that don’t necessarily meet societal standards of beauty.
The adjective has become a positive term used online, but not exactly one you would associate with Hilary Duff, the actress and singer best known for her lead role in the TV Show (and subsequent movie) Lizzie McGuire. The series followed the 13-year-old Lizzie, a shy and clumsy teenager who dreamed to fit in at school, but a lot has changed since then.
In the years since her emergence into stardom, Duff has released a number of solo albums and starred in various movies and TV shows. She also got married, divorced, and became a mother in the last decade or so. We all know that things change, and our childhood idols will grow up, but the internet was definitely not prepared for some recent photographs that emerged of the celebrity.
This paparazzi shot shocked those who grew up with the teen star, who is now in her late 20s. Once the photo hit Twitter, no one could get enough of her new look.
While Duff’s career is still going strong, many still think of Lizzie McGuire when they see the actress. Episodes usually focused on Lizzie’s family life, as well as other relatable teen issues. Lizzie has an animated alter-ego that represents her feelings, both were far from what you would deem “thick” at the time.
Many fans of the show were quick to point out the huge change since she starred in the Disney teen sitcom was on air in the early 2000s.
Others started comparing her to other celebrities like the Kardashians, while there were some fans who took offence at the idea of comparing Duff to that particular family.
This one is for fans of the Disney show. Poor Gordo couldn’t catch a break, I wonder what he’d think of his crush now?
After this went viral, some were sure to point out that Hilary Duff wasn’t always as skinny as people are making her out to be. One commenter said: “Hilary Duff has always been pretty curvy. I remember when she was a teen she used to get flak about her weight (as opposed to Linsdsay [sic] Lohan, who went in the opposite direction)”.
So maybe our memories of the show aren’t what we thought they were, but either way, we can all agree that Hilary Duff is looking phenomenal 13 years after Lizzie McGuire ended its run.
Another star that was recently deemed thick was Rihanna, but she got an entirely different response. Why read up on the time she got fat-shamed by a troll to the fury of the internet.
