The 2017 Golden Globes is a long-awaited date on Hollywood’s calendar. Typically, the event’s biggest controversies stem from a poorly fitting outfit or someone getting a little too drunk at the afterparty. This year however, the awards show’s most memorable moment took a much more political turn.
It was during Meryl Streep’s acceptance speech for her highly coveted lifetime achievement award that things reached peak politics. In her widely-celebrated speech, Streep began by praising the diversity of Hollywood’s biggest stars, saying:“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners, and if we kick them all out, we’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts… which are not the arts.”
Streep hasn’t been shy about mocking Trump in the past
However, Streep wasn’t quite done yet. She went on to attack Trump directly, reminding her audience of the time he openly mocked a disabled reporter:
“There was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good – there was nothing good about it – but it was effective, and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth.”“It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter: someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t a movie – it was real life.”
Of course, Donald Trump isn’t the kind of man to sit back and let criticism wash over him. A day after the Golden Globes, he took to Twitter to directly address Streep’s comments. Head over to the next page to find out what he said.
In his vicious reply to her speech, Trump called Meryl Streep “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood”, and a “Hillary flunky who lost big”. He was also quick to explain away his actions, saying he “never ‘mocked’ a disabled reporter”.
For the record, Donald Trump did mock a reporter with a disability. In fact, you can check out the footage for yourself here.
Following the rather unpresidential series of tweets, the internet responded in the only way it knows how: with gifs. Lots, and lots of gifs.
