Do you have something about yourself that you don’t know how to bring up? Something that you don’t want to share with everyone you meet, but don’t want to keep a secret either? Odds are your confidential fact is not quite as astonishing as what viewers were witnessed to on First Dates this week.
The Channel 4 show brings all sorts of people together. For a variety of reasons, each week’s featured dinner guests have been unlucky in love, and are now seeking companionship in a different way. This episode’s participants were Eve and Jordan from Wales.
Eve, is a 22 year old from Pontyrhyl near Brigend. The beauty therapist (check out the Instagram) had more than a party trick up her sleeve. But it was only later in the conversation that Eve’s secret came out.
Jordan, from South Wales, started off the date sweetly enough. When a waitress asked whether they had looked at the menu yet, he remarked that “I’m looking at her at the moment”. Yet it was his next comment that gave her the incentive to reveal her true self.
Jordan pointed to someone across the restaurant, noting that he used to have a top-knot just like them. Eve has said that “I always try to tell people right away”, but stumbles over her words for a moment. Eventually she decides to rip off the bandaid and just go for it. “I don’t have any hair, I wear a wig”.
To demonstrate, she removes her wig and shows off her bald head. Her amiable date at first only responds with “okay” and “wow”, but seems positive about the reveal. Eve has alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss, sometimes in patches but often total. She has had the condition since she was 3 years old: “One of the main reasons I wanted to do beauty was because I went through school and I was bullied.”
Eve hasn’t always been so confident in herself. “It’s hard. It’s really hard.” she said with tears in her eyes, “My parents have to save really hard for me to have nice hair. My dad, he works so hard. He drew on my first set of eyebrows”.
But Eve’s worries that she’s scared her date off are unwarranted. “It suits you” he tells her. And when she complains about how annoying it is to put back on, he tells her she can keep it off. “One of the main reasons I wanted to do beauty was because I went through school and I was bullied,” she recalled.
She heads off to the bathroom, but with new found confidence she returns sans wig. Jordan compliments her: “You look beautiful”. “This must be the weirdest date I’ve ever been on” she tells her partner for the evening, but he disagrees: “Best date I’ve ever been on. I like you, you’re unique”. What a gentleman.
When Eve’s date aired, the internet went nuts for the emotional and uplifting video.
Jordan came off pretty well too, as many viewers were pleasantly surprised by his reaction to the reveal
Unfortunately, the couple didn’t reunite. After some believed she had turned him down for being “too nice”, the criticisms came too. She had her defenders too, and Eve weighed in to set things straight:
