The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air rap has to be one of the most iconic theme tunes in the world. We all know most of the words, and some people are able to recite the entire thing bar for bar.
We’ve all been there. It’s 1am and you’re in a bar or on the night bus home, you hear that infamous intro and although you try and stop your mouth from moving, it just comes out: “Now this is a story all about how/My life got flipped-turned upside down/And I’d like to take a minute/Just sit right there/I’ll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel-Air”.
Whilst the song is iconic, it is also incredibly annoying.
Me and my housemates have a list at home which features all of the songs we don’t think should be allowed to be played on a night out, and The Fresh Prince rap tops that list (just above Mr Brightside). But, there is no denying it was the sound of our childhood. It reminds me of that pre-dinner, post school time where you just had you feet up in front of the television, but it also sadly reminds me of many drunken nights at university where I just wanted to go back to my flat.
However, the song has once again reared its ugly, catchy head this week, as Comedy Central revealed there is actually a hidden verse to the song.
Yes, all you people who claim they know every word to the song, you heard me right. You best get practicing, as I’m not too sure sure many of you will know the following verse. Take a look at the video below, which also features a handy sing-a-long feature.
It’s easy to see why this verse hasn’t made it onto the main feature, seeing as it’s nowhere near as good. One bit that is particularly bad is when Will Smith struggles to get the words ‘is this what the people of Bel-Air livin’ like’ to roll off the tongue in a similar fashion to the rest of the song.
However, it is a brilliant bit of nostalgia for a show which ran for six seasons and 148 episodes. If it wasn’t for the Fresh Prince, we wouldn’t have Will Smith, and if we didn’t have Will Smith, “Men In Black” would never have been made, and I’m not sure that’s a world I even want to think about.
There were rumours of the cast reuniting one last time after Alfonso Ribiero posted a photo of them all together on Instagram, however the actor was quick to dispel this rumour.
“Since the passing of my favorite dad in the world, ever on TV, James Avery [who played Uncle Phil on the show] passed, the chances of a Fresh Prince coming back together will not happen.” “I don’t think we feel as a cast that we would do even our fans justice. We all felt like he was the centerpiece or the nucleus of that show. Without him, it just doesn’t work. So even if the whole cast comes to support me on the show, we’re not looking for that to happen. And that’s OK.”
So whilst we might not get a reunion, at least we’ve got a new verse to all belt out when we’re drunk… hurrah.
