We all remember Jazzy Jeff, right? Known formally as Jeffery Allen Townes, the world grew to love Jazz as the silly sidekick to Will Smith on classic 90’s show, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. We watched in amusement as the pair got into shenanigan after shenanigan, and would chuckle as Jazz gave Will some unwarranted and usually unhelpful advice during tough situations.
Well, in case you didn’t know, Jazzy Jeff and Will have been friends in real life ever since the Fresh Prince, and have collaborated on music endlessly. In fact, DJ/producer Jazz and Rapper/Actor Will are set to reunite on stage for the first time in twenty years this summer at the Limewire Festival in Blackpool. But as excited as we are to hear more of what Will’s got to offer in the music game (I mean, who didn’t love Switch, right?), we can’t help but wonder… is the Fresh Prince ever going to make a comeback?
There have been revival rumors circulating for years, mostly because the public just really wants to see Smith roaming around Bel Air one more time. But it was not until now, over 20 years after the show’s end, that we’ve heard an actor from the show (this time, Jazzy Jeff), confirm that the possibility of a reunion is definitely on the table.
In an interview with The Sun, Jazz discussed the talk that has circulated around bringing back the 90’s classic: “There have been talks with people about doing something. I think it would be cool if they did it and go down memory lane again.”
He couldn’t help but note the immense popularity of the show, which, although it is drenched in 90’s culture references, has somehow remained timeless over the decades. The maintenance of its popularity amongst even younger generations (who were not alive when it first aired) is a testament to the staying-power of the plot, and the potential success of a reboot.
“It’s a blessing to be part of something that people still hold in high regard. You can’t beat that,” Jazz continued, “It’s hard for people to keep their attention span normally, but to be able to keep it for all these years and transcend generations, put their kids onto it, this is deep.”
Rumors of a revival fluttered earlier this year when the cast had an adorable reunion dinner at Nobu in Malibu. The crew included Will Smith, Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton), Tatyana Ali (Ashley), Karyn Parsons (Hilary), Daphne Reid (Vivien), and Joseph Marcell (Geofferey). Unfortunately not present was James Avery, or Uncle Phil, who tragically passed in 2013 during a failed heart surgery.
Audiences everywhere were undoubtedly heartbroken by the news of Avery’s passing, as watching his character go through many poignant and fatherly moments with Will certainly struck a cord with many people. A Fresh Prince reunion, then, would bring back fond memories of watching the Banks family fumble through shenanigans and heartbreak, a combination of plots that lend to the show’s timelessness. For now, we’ll just keep watching re-runs and pray that the possibility of a reunion becomes a reality.
