From a young age we are all reminded to make sure our seatbelts are on properly, and we have followed those rules most of the time at least. I have no qualms about wearing one, but admit there have been occasions where I have shared a seat or couldn't get the buckle to work, so decided not to bother.
But even these occasional lapses in judgement can be fatal. This one patient, a 25-year-old woman who has not been named, suffered devastating injuries after she failed to wear her seatbelt, the journey ending in a catastrophic crash. Her skull was broken and fractured in several places, with fragments of bone displaced and both her upper and lower jaw severely damaged.
As this 3-D model, gained through a CT scan taken of the woman after her horrific crash, shows, her skull was supposedly damaged beyond repair. Not only was the bone structure obliterated, but she suffered a monumental eye injury, as her left eye was found to have been pushed into her nasal cavity.
That was until she underwent a complicated reconstructive surgery to put her face back into working order. The reconstructive procedure went on for eight hours, and was remarkably successful. An ophthalmology surgeon (who deals with medical and surgical eye problems) posted the scans onto the medical website Figure 1, to the praise of other medical professionals. As you can see, the results were astonishing.
The accident and surgery occurred in 2015, but the images have recently been uploaded to both Reddit and Imgur after being found on the website. On Figure 1, the surgeon describes the patient's injuries and the following operation:
"A 25-year-old female unrestrained passenger in a motor vehicle collision presented to the trauma bay with extensive injuries. A trauma work-up revealed a traumatic brain injury with intracranial hemorrhage, a traumatic eye injury requiring enucleation, and extensive facial fractures. This CT shows her completed facial reconstruction. Thanks to a dedicated multidisciplinary team, the patient is now ambulatory and recovering well"
Many medical professionals commented on the post and praised the surgeon for his work, with some describing it as a "masterpiece". Another user said that it was "Medicine at its finest". The surgeon was keen to stress the woman is now "doing well and looks great".
If you need any further warning of the dangers of not paying attention on the road or following safety precautions, maybe you should watch this catastrophic footage that the police want every driver to see.
