If you want to be hated and vilified, the easiest way to go about it is to be cruel to animals. Our pets are supposed to be members of our family: we take these animals into our homes in order to love and care for them.
Despite this, there are still pet owners who seem only to own an animal so that they have a helpless victim to bully and abuse. Animal rescue shelters routinely save these persecuted pets from unimaginably awful conditions.
According to statistics released by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, dogs are the most commonly abused species of animal in the Western World, and over 57 per cent of reported cases of animal cruelty in the United Kingdom pertain to canines. Furthermore, in 2015, the RSPCA investigated 33,884 cases involving cats, 15,965 relating to horses and ponies. This is in addition to a total of 81,146 complaints of cruelty against man’s best friend.
In this regard, the internet is an extremely useful tool for those who want to rescue abused animals from further harm, since it means that images and videos of animal abuse can be shared and perpetrators shamed quickly. The latest example to gain significant attention on social media is an incident whereby a dog owner was spotted by a bystander lifting their dog by its neck.
These disturbing images were taken by an anonymous bystander who witnessed a man in the city of Mount Holly, North Carolina, carrying a dog roughly by its neck. The woman confronted the man (whose identity has not been revealed), but he told the woman to mind her own business.
Thinking quickly, the good Samaritan snapped these quick pictures of him on her smartphone and contacted the Mount Holly police department, who quickly detained the man on charges of animal cruelty. She also contacted Pawsitive Impact NC Dog Rescue, a dog sanctuary based in Union County – who posted the images on Facebook in order to raise awareness about animal cruelty.
Angry commenters expressed their disgust with the man’s treatment of the animal. “Thank goodness bystander took action instead of just taking a picture. Hoping the dog is in safe hands now,” stated one commenter, while another added: “I hope there is a special place in hell for people like this! He should also be treated the same way. Put a collar on him and drag him around!”
It really is amazing how quickly abused pets will make a full recovery once they’ve been given some loving attention by caring owners. For instance, meet Chunky, a pup who was brutally tortured by teenagers, but looks a lot happier and healthier now
