Mysterious sea creatures like the Loch Ness Monster and the Kraken have plagued folklore for centuries. So, when a mysterious mass was spotted floating in the shallows near the idyllic island of Leyte in the Philippenes, people were understandably interested.
Immediately, the decaying corpse of the unidentified creature was hauled in to shore by perplexed authorities, as bystanders watched in awe from the safety of the sand. However, when the peculiar creature was dragged to the shore, the mystery only intensified. What was it?!
The rotting corpse was unceremoniously towed onto a beach in Maasin City, as stunned locals watched with a mixture of curiosity and horror. The 10ft mass was indistinguishable, was it a whale? Or, something more sinister that had been lurking off the coast?
If the locals were mystified, they were even more confused when the authorities failed to identify the giant carcass. Julius Alpino from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources stated that concluding the creatures identity was a challenge, due to the fact that it was so deeply decomposed. However, he suspects it to be a perished whale.
A conclusion that many are not satisfied with and are challenging…
As the story goes viral online, many are left questioning if the beast is indeed a whale, or something as of yet unknown. Can you decipher what it once was from these haunting close-up images…
The lengthy sea creature is certainly unfamiliar in the photographs taken by Nujnuj Capistrano, a 42-year-old photographer, who coincidentally happened to be in the area when the corpse was discovered. Explaining what he saw, Capistrano said:
“I was just passing by the beach and took some photos but I don’t know about the details. I was surprised because it’s too big and it’s the first time I saw that kind of creature.”
With the creature still unidentified, authorities decided to tow it back out to sea, due to the potent smell it was excreting which they believed presented a health hazard. Meaning that the ghastly beast is still lurking in the depths for unassuming fishermen to discover.
There is every plausibility that the unidentified creature could be a whale, however, when you consider the size of the various oceans, it is also plausible that it could be a totally new sea species that we are yet to be acquainted with.
Usually, when a whale dies, their bodies float for a short time before sinking into the depths. The whales corpse becomes food for other fish and sea animals who nourish themselves on the meat of the giant creature. However, rarely a carcass will emerge on a beach after drifting into the shallows.
This isn’t the first time an unidentified creature has washed up on the beach. When citizens of Texas returned home after Hurricane Harvey, they were met with chaos. But, one family discovered something even more haunting, when they went for a walk on the beach…
Lying on the sand they found a bizarre looking creature, which had been washed up on the shore during the tropical cyclone. Confused and intrigued, they requested Twitter users help them identify the eyeless creature. The online community didn’t let them down, and it was quickly identified as a fangtooth snake-eel.
