One of the great things about being human is that we are a part of a race capable of extraordinary things. This is often proven in life or death situations when people have to act quickly, something which forced 22-year-old immigrant Mamoudou Gassama to do the unthinkable.
Gassama had been living illegally in Paris when he saw a child dangling precariously from a four-story balcony. Instead of waiting to catch the child, a boy, he decided to put his own life at risk by climbing the apartment himself in an unbelievable 30 seconds to save his life.

Recounting the extraordinary incident to the French president Emmanuel Macron, Gassama said, “I ran. I crossed the street to save him.”
What’s more is that he didn’t think twice about getting hurt himself, adding, “When I started to climb, it gave me the courage to keep climbing.”
God “helped me” too, he said. “Thank God I saved him.”
The 22-year-old said that after he had saved the four-year-old child, he was trembling.
The attention Gassama has received has a result of his heroic act has now changed his life forever.
He first arrived in Europe illegally in 2014 after fleeing his home country of Libya where he was beaten and arrested “but I wasn’t discouraged”.
Until recently, Gassama had been living in Italy but moved to France a few months ago “dreaming of building his life”.
While France is currently in the process of toughening its attitude towards illegal immigration, because of Gassama’s heroic act, Macron has decided to temporarily waver this approach and give the brave 22-year-old the reward he deserves.
“You saved a child. Without you, no one knows what would have become of him,” Macron said. “You need courage and the capability to do that.”
Since Gassama displayed extraordinary climbing ability during the incident, Macron decided to offer him not only French citizenship but a job in France’s fire department so that his skills could be used to save more lives in the future.
“You have become an example because millions have seen you” on social media, the president said.
But what about the child’s parents? Will they be charged for allowing him to get into such a precarious position?
Judicial sources have revealed that the boy’s father is currently being questioned by police for leaving his child unattended. He was apparently outside playing Pokémon GO when the incident took place, the Daily Mail reported.
The boy’s mother was not in Paris at the time of the incident.
The child is believed to have climbed through an open window onto the balcony.
“The father left the flat just as the incident was unfolding. He went shopping and then decided to play Pokemon Go in the street which took a little time before he returned home,” Francois Molins said.
“The father is very upset because he realizes what he did and what could have happened,” Molins added.
The boy’s father could now be facing up to two years behind bars for failing to properly take care of his child.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish Gassama – who has been dubbed “Spiderman” by the internet – all the best for his future.
