The online world is a perilous place in which not everything is to be believed. From your friend’s vacation pictures on Instagram which shows signs of some heavy editing, to the tale tales you read on people’s Facebook pages, the majority of what we see online is embellished.
So when 18-year-old Reanna Stephens from South Carolina announced that she was pregnant, people were skeptical. Why? Because despite being six months pregnant, the teen doesn’t even have a shadow of a baby bump.
Stephens, a student, claims that she has been the victim of abuse from strangers in the street who have called her a fraud whilst suggesting she is anorexic due to her thin frame.
These strangers have also enquired about the health of her unborn child, speculating that it will be unhealthy upon birth.
“People really affect me with their comments, I try to stay calm as I know both me and my baby are healthy,” the student explains. “I have had people stopping me in the street and giving me nasty looks. It’s heartbreaking that instead of getting, ‘Aw, look at your bump!’ I get people being rude to me as soon as they realize how far gone I am.”
It’s become such a topic of conversation, that some people believe Stephens is faking the whole pregnancy for attention:
“People have asked me, ‘You’re not faking your pregnancy are you?’, and ‘Are you sure your baby is healthy?’ as well as people telling me I need to eat more and see a doctor in case I starve my child. I have also been told that I shouldn’t be having a baby if I can’t feed myself, but people know nothing about my diet or lifestyle.”
“I have done mixed martial arts for six years, including boxing, kickboxing, jujitsu, circuit training and weight training along with yoga and cardio. Now I only do yoga and cardio, but this is part of the reason for my slender physique,” the teen explained.
“I also eat a vegan diet, so I don’t have any animal products and avoid unhealthy foods such as fizzy drink, sweets and junk food,” Stephens continued.
By now you’d think that people knew better than to judge a woman’s bump, especially after model Sarah Stage proved everyone wrong after delivering a perfectly healthy baby despite receiving backlash from her fans who were concerned that she still had abs despite being nine months pregnant:
Fortunately for Stephens, she has got a support network around her, in spite of what the public are saying about her:
“Luckily I have the support of my family, because my mother was in a similar situation when she was pregnant. She was an athlete and she didn’t show until she was seven-months pregnant. Although I’m much smaller than her, I believe being active has a part to play in the size of your bump.”
“My baby is growing the perfect amount every month as it’s measured, just like everyone else’s, so it’s absolutely nothing to do with mine or the baby’s health. I have compared my bump over my pregnancy to people on different parent pages on Facebook, and it’s not as big as other people’s. But I love my small bump, it’s not big, but I think it’s perfect in its own way and it’s my body and my bump – no one else’s.”
Stephens is in a similar situation to the Duchess of Cambridge, who is also expecting her child in April. The slender Royal, as with her two previous pregnancies, is showing little signs of pregnancy despite being six months gone.
The picture below was taken during the Christmas holidays, and you’d be forgiven for thinking the Duchess wasn’t even pregnant.
For those that believe Stephens is lying about her predicament, there are only another four months to wait until the truth is finally revealed. In the meantime, we wish her the best of luck with her pregnancy.
