The Royal Family are famous for their dedication to tradition. No matter how archaic or baseless the protocol, they follow it religiously. But, that could all be set to change when Meghan Markle marries Prince Harry in May this year.
The California-born actress has already shaken things up in the stagnant Royal waters despite having only been engaged to Prince Harry for just over one month.
The 36-year-old Suits star raised eyebrows over Christmas when she was invited to join the Royal Family for festive celebrations at Sandringham House, the Queen’s private home in Norfolk – a courtesy that was not extended to Kate Middleton when she was engaged to Prince William, despite the fact that she’d been dating the future King for a considerably longer time.
Markle, who has been married once before, has also chosen not to indulge in the Royal women’s penchant for flesh-colored tights. Instead, the bride-to-be chooses to go bare-legged showing off her enviable pins for the waiting paparazzi.
Not only that, Markle also has her own social media accounts – although, she hasn’t shared anything since she became engaged to the fifth-in-line to the British throne – despite there being a strict ban on any British Royals having a personal platform online. However, Prince Harry is known to have his own Facebook and Instagram account under a fake name.
So it is no wonder that as the happy couple begin to plan their wedding day, which will be held in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, there is mass speculation in the air that they shall be steering away from tradition.
They shall not be marrying at Westminster Abbey – as Harry’s brother, grandmother and great-grandfather did – instead, they have chosen Windsor Castle, which could be due to the fact that Markle is divorced and thus cannot be wed at the Abbey.
In addition, the event shall be paid for by the Royal family themselves, excluding the security which shall be paid for by the British taxpayer.
But, possibly the biggest break from tradition is the fact that Meghan Markle has allegedly requested that her mother, Doria Ragland, walk her down the aisle rather than her father, Thomas Markle Sr.
Not only is this breaking Royal protocol, but the traditional wedding structure too. It is very rare for mothers to walk their daughters down the aisle at extravagant white weddings. Instead, that job falls on the father who gives his daughter away as a symbolic gesture.
Speaking to US Weekly, a source claimed to have “heard that Meghan wants her mother to walk her down the aisle, which would be a sweet moment.”
“While they will always be mindful of traditions and the views of their elders, the day is ultimately about them and what they want to do,” the source continued.
“The day of the wedding itself will certainly hold a few unconventional surprises. Don’t expect a royal wedding by numbers. They want to involve their friends and family as much in as much as possible throughout the day.”
“Their romance feels refreshingly modern and I think that’s something that everyone at Kensington Palace has felt incredibly excited by,” a Palace insider added.
If true, this could mark a real change for the Royal Family. Could Meghan Markle be the breath of fresh air that ‘The Establishment’ needs? Watch this space!
