Beauty has always been subjective. What one person finds attractive, another is turned off by. Luckily, we are all very different in our own way, so our unique identity is guaranteed to be appreciated by someone.
However, model Sophia Hadjipanteli isn’t remotely bothered by what people think of her appearance. The stunning and striking Cypriot model, who sports a full, dark unibrow, is fully embracing her quirky appearance and people are going wild for her nonplussed attitude to beauty…
Sophia proudly promotes the #UnibrowMovement via her Instagram account, encouraging her 152,000 followers to embrace body positivity in whatever form. “The #UnibrowMovement isn’t really specific to just eyebrows,” Sophia told ELLE. “It is about accepting that one thing that others tell you, or make you feel like, you shouldn’t accept.”
Eyebrows have recently experienced a revolution, which can mainly be attributed to model Cara Delevingne, who made bushy brows chic, and Kim Kardashian who made HD brows mainstream. However, one brow trend that hasn’t caught on is the unibrow. Although, Sophia is working tirelessly to make the monobrow happen.
The young model’s unique look was the result of a happy mistake.
Bored of continuously filling in her brows, Sophia decided to tint them to save herself the effort. But, unintentionally, she turned them black. “My brother ran into the bathroom and first started laughing, then kept telling me it actually looked pretty cool,” Sophia recalls. Rather than be mortified by her mistake, Sophia embraced it and has tinted her naturally blond brows black ever since.
Speaking to Vice, Sophia revealed how the fixation with her eyebrows started with her mother’s advice:
“Growing up, the reason I always paid so much attention to my eyebrows was because my mom would always tell me, ‘do not over pluck your eyebrows—your eyebrows are gorgeous the way they are.’ In most cases, we kind of look to a certain role model in our lives, and for me it was my mom, and she has really nice eyebrows, so I kind of idolized her in that sense.
It wasn’t until recently—I think it was about two years ago—I just kind of decided to stop [waxing them]. I don’t think it was anything in particular that happened that made me want to boycott doing my eyebrows, I think it was just a preference thing.”

But, her unique look has attracted a lot of unwanted attention from trolls online.
Her unconventional look has garnered a lot of attention online, from those that both love and hate the look. Sophia revealed to Vice how she actually enjoys having that control over people’s anger at her appearance:
“Yes. I’m constantly asked, ‘how do you deal with the negative criticism?’ Definitely take this at face value — but a part of me loves having that control over someone that they get so annoyed and mad. It’s laughable at first.
A lot of people will say, ‘well how come you groom the rest of your body?’ And I think it’s just a preference thing. I genuinely can’t describe it as anything else.”
But, Sophia doesn’t care about the haters. “I personally think my face looks better this way,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “Others disagree, and that’s totally cool. I am not trying to get anyone on the unibrow bandwagon.”
“I want to be able to teach people that just because others say it’s ugly or it is unattractive, doesn’t mean they’re right. I like the way I look and I’m not going to let someone sitting behind a computer pressure me into changing,” says Sophia.
We personally believe Sophia is gorgeous – but even if you don’t, why comment? Why do people feel the need to knock somebody down just because they’re different to them – especially over something as trivial as eyebrows.
When explaining if she would keep the unruly brows forever, Sophia explained:
“I look at [my unibrow] like it’s winged eyeliner or red lipstick. In five years I might look back and think, ‘that was a cool phase!’ But until people start to accept others for this specific feature on their face, I won’t feel ready to move on from it.”
Sophia is a huge advocate for body positivity and uses her platform to promote self-love. Explaining her focus, Sophia told ELLE:
“I think the most powerful thing a young person can do today is make sure every single thing that is represented on their body is approved by them. Don’t dye your hair because others prefer you that way, don’t wear mascara because society thinks that your eyelashes aren’t long enough, don’t wear fake tan because people aren’t ready for your beautiful pale skin. Do all of these things because YOU want to.”
Sophia is confidently on a one-woman mission to change the way we think about our bodies and style, and she is doing a stunning job so far! We are certainly fans of her unconventional look and wait excitedly to see if the monobrow becomes the must-have winter fashion accessory – who needs a scarf and wooly hat?!
