Now, I don’t know about you, but if I were to be permanently attached to my sister I would undoubtedly lead a miserable existence.
It’s not that I don’t love my sister, I do. But having to rely on her to accomplish basic tasks on a daily basis is quite a frightening thought. In my mind, I don’t think it could possibly work but in reality, it’s very possible.
For the past 27 years, conjoined twins Abby and Brittany Hensel have been proving that it is indeed possible to live as one with your twin. Born with one body, but two very separate heads the girls have been forced to live their life as one despite having two very distinct personalities.

At the time of their birth, the girls’ parents chose not to have them surgically separated due to the risks that such a procedure presented. There was a high chance that one of the girls wouldn’t make it through the operation and as a result their parents decided to boycott any attempts to separate them in order to save both their lives.
Naturally, their unique appearance has garnered a lot of attention throughout their lives. With two heads and one body, which they both command, the girls certainly do make for an unusual, yet remarkable, sight.
However, if you look a little deeper than their appearance, you can learn just how remarkable Abby and Brittany really are. For example, they both successfully passed their driver’s license exams and now they nip around in a vehicle which they simultaneously drive – Abby controls the devices on the right, whilst Brittany manages those on the left.
They also both graduated from high school in 2008 and went straight on to study at Bethel University in their home state of Minnesota, where they majored in education. They graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, a serious accolade considering their restrictive condition.
Despite the twins distaste for being behind the camera, they have appeared in multiple television shows. From an interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1996 to their own reality TV show, Abby & Brittany, which ran for eight episodes in 2012.
This reality show saw the girls’ popularity reach new heights as thousands of people around the world became invested in their unique life.
But for those who took an active interest in the lives of Abby and Brittany, everything suddenly went very quiet. After their reality show came to an end, it wasn’t immediately clear what had happened to the duo. But for those who were familiar with their courage, determination and positivity there was no doubt that they’d go on to do incredible things.
So it may not surprise you to learn that the girls are now teachers. As of October 2012, they have been teaching fourth and fifth-grade maths on a part-time basis. Rather than be perplexed by the appearance of their teachers, the children fully embrace their tutors.
In fact, they are extremely appreciative to have them for it means that they have two teachers in the classroom at all times who can help them with their queries.
They truly are making the most of this life that they share. In the future, they hope to find love (individually!) and get married. Their dreams certainly aren’t over yet, but it seems that they have a go-get attitude, so no doubt we shall see them walking down the aisle sometime soon!
