Do you have your own doppelgänger? Odds are that you probably do – as they’re a lot more common than you think. For those of you who are scratching your heads thinking that I’ve made up a word, the term doppelgänger is a German word which translates loosely as “double-walker”, and refers to the ghostly double of a living person, or more commonly, the eerie phenomenon where someone looks exactly like someone else.
Across history, various famous figures have reported spotting doppelgängers by accident and circumstance. People like English renaissance poet John Donne, the romantic poet Percy Shelley, and the German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe have all documented occasions where they chanced upon a stranger who looked exactly like them.
At a glance it looks like evidence of the supernatural, or like something out of science fiction (like the pod people from Invasion Of The Body Snatchers). But it’s a lot more common than you might think. Think of all the stress Katy Perry and Zooey Deschanel probably have to put up with when people mistake them for each other.
Thanks to the ubiquity of the internet and social media, these days it’s a lot easier to find a doppelgänger than it used to be. We’ve seen people meet their twin on planes and at train stations, and at one point Ed Sheeran shared a snapshot of a fan he met who looked exactly like him. Usually it’s weird enough to have just one doppelgänger; but now a young girl has managed to break some kind of world record.
She has over a dozen! Check out her and her legion of lookalikes over on page two. A teenage girl has received a whole lot of attention on Twitter this week, after posting an image of herself standing next to a stranger who looked eerily like her.
Santana Gutierre, 17, who hails from Las Vegas, Nevada, but is currently studying in California, uploaded and shared a pic of herself way back in September of 2016, standing next to another girl she met while shopping at the Fashion Valley Mall. This girl resembled her so much that she could easily have been her twin.
The lookalike was named Isobel, and worked for the charity Save The Children. Isobel approached Santana to ask for a donation, but the two girls noticed the uncanny likeness. The picture quickly attained over 40,000 likes on Twitter and over 23,000 retweets.
However, this week other Twitter users started pointing out that Santana looked like a whole bunch of different women. A Twitter user called Ally Holt was soon outed as another doppelgänger, and other followers pointed out that Santana also looked a lot like actresses like Samantha Boscarino and Auli’i Cravalho, the lead actress in the latest Disney animated feature Moana.
Many other Twitters expressed their incredulity that Santana looked like so many different people. Commenting on the situation, Santana stated: “I was extremely freaked out. I showed [the photos] to my dad because everyone said, ‘Your parents have some explaining to do!’”
“I kind of felt bad [for Isobel] because I wasn’t listening to what she was saying — all I was thinking was, ‘this girl looks exactly like me,’” Santana continued, before stating that she’s been planning a big meet up with the rest of her look-alikes, and hopes that they can all wear matching outfits. “It would be so funny for all of us to meet one day to see each other in person,” she said.
It seems like more and more of these mysterious body doubles are cropping up all over the place. Recently someone spotted a girl who looks almost exactly like Chloë Grace Moretz working a fast-food joint in the Philippines.
