Confidence is something which we all struggle with from time to time. As J.K. Rowling famously said, “it’s impossible to live without failing at something, and failures in life can often take their toll on how we feel about ourselves.”
But it’s not just failure that can affect our confidence, our appearances can influence it too, and there are certain things which are completely out of our control, like our size, something which 25-year-old Asta Young knows all too well.
Check out the video below to discover how cosplay gives her confidence:
“As a kid, I knew that I was different,” Atsa, who lives in Arizona with her husband Ty, explained. “I was trying too hard to fit in. When I should have just focused on, y’know, I’m here to stand out so I might as well stand out.”
Asta, who works as an artist, revealed that she was never formally diagnosed with dwarfism. “My parents just always said, ‘Hey, you were born small,'” she said.
“I was picked on as a kid. I would always get made fun of [for] my little legs and that affected my confidence a lot.”
“I remember I used to go home crying, [but] the difference between then and now is just mostly the fact that I’m a lot happier.”
Speaking about his wife’s confidence, Ty said, “My first impression of Asta was that she was just so positive, so energetic, and just so good to be around.”
“He fell in love with me for who I am,” Asta added.
“Cosplay is basically like costume play,” Asta said. “I got into it like three or four years ago. I’ve always been a geek at heart. I was like, ‘How cool would it be to dress up as these characters?’ And then I discovered cosplay.”
“When you’re in costume, you’re in a whole different world,” Asta revealed.
“I just love how accepting the community is. No one would ever judge you. It’s like there’s no discrimination.”
The 25-year-old then said that cosplay is ultimately about having fun.
“My favorite part is actually making the costumes,” Asta said. “You put in all this hard work. Sometimes it takes months depending on how intricate it is.”
“It’s really, really neat seeing it come together.”
Ty then explained how cosplay has helped Asta’s confidence grow over the years.
“I think Asta started out not being the most confident. Now I think she’s very confident in every little aspect she carries herself.”
Sadly, however, Asta has had her critics, and when she first started posting he cosplays online, she was criticised. Thankfully, she simply ignored and block the trolls and has continued to rock her cosplays ever since then.
“You have to love yourself,” Asta said. “No one else can love you if you don’t love yourself first.”
Amen to that.
