Firefighter Pulls Lifeless Dog From A Fire, Then Shocks The Owner…

A house fire is many people’s worst nightmare. Even if you’re lucky enough to get out on time, if it’s a bad fire, you’ll lose countless irreplaceable things – whether it’s photographs, paintings your kids have made, or even just the home you’ve grown to love. There’s some things that money can’t replace and pets are one of them.

Man’s best friend has a remarkable ability to survive, but a house fire is a devastating force. If only it was possible to tell them how to get out. When an animal’s scared, it usually tries to hide instead of running away. Dogs are no exception. After a terrible house fire, this pooch found itself fighting for its life…

Have You Ever Saved An Animal’s Life?

If you’ve ever seen a dog cower under a table when it hears fireworks on Independence Day, then you can imagine just how scared our beloved pooches would be during a house fire. This dog found itself trapped in a terrible fire, and its lifeless body was pulled out by a firefighter who was on a mission to save it…

NEXT: How this truly SHOCKING story began…

When a fire broke out in a Santa Monica apartment, a pet dog, Nalu, must have been terrified, struggling to breathe in the ferocious flames were tearing through the building. Time was running out for this beloved pooch…

1. The Fire

Nalu lived with his human Crystal in the apartment building, but unfortunately a fire broke out in another apartment’s kitchen and quickly spread through the building. That’s when Nalu found himself in serious danger…

NEXT: Crystal had NO idea anything was wrong till she got home…

Crystal had been out the afternoon the blaze broke out in her apartment complex. She must have got a terrible fright when she arrived home to see the smoke, knowing that her beloved Nalu was trapped inside…

2. Crystal Wasn’t Home

When Crystal realized that her apartment was on fire, her first instinct was to run back in for Nalu, but she was stopped by the thick, back smoke which prevented her from going inside. There was only one option…

NEXT: Crystal called the FIRE department…

Crystal called the fire department. After that she had no option but to wait and hope that somehow Nalu was still alive. Maybe she’d left a window open and there’d be a way for her pooch to breathe…

3. The Fire Department Are Called

“[We] began receiving multiple 911 calls [to] report [a] structure fire,” the Santa Monica fire department revealed on their Facebook page. “The first fire [engine] arrived on scene at 4:10 pm.” The race to save Nalu was on!

NEXT: The fire department arrived VERY quickly…

Whenever there’s an emergency, a quick response from services like the fire brigade are crucial, especially if there’s lives in danger – human or not. Thankfully, the fire department were at Crystal’s apartment building in minutes.

4. The Blaze Is Tackled

“Truck Company Firefighters placed ladders and ascended to the roof,” the department added on their Facebook page. “[They] cut a ventilation opening to allow for the release of super-heated smoke and fire gasses.”

NEXT: But the fire had to be CONTAINED before Nalu could be rescued…

Before any of the firefighters could save Nalu, they had to contain the fire to ensure that it didn’t spread to any other buildings in the neighborhood. But would they be able to stop the flames from ravaging the building?!

5. The Fire Was Stopped

A group of firefighters went inside to tackle the blaze with water whilst another group emptied the building of smoke. Together, they helped contain the fire to the kitchen it started in. It just goes to show how amazing firefighters are!

NEXT: Now it was time to SAVE Nalu from the flames…

Crystal must have been overwhelmed by worry, even when the blaze was contained. Would Nalu still be alive? She wasn’t just a small dog, she was an old one too. Then this amazing firefighter went into the building…

6. Andrew Klein

Andrew Klein was willing to put his own life on the line to save man’s best friend, disregarding the danger the smoke inside posed to him. Once the fire had been contained, he CRAWLED into the building and found Nalu in Cystal’s bedroom. “He was totally lifeless,” he said afterwards. “I picked him up and ran out of the apartment.”

NEXT: This firefighter REFUSED to give up on Nalu…

Billy Fernando, who happened to be passing the scene, was a true animal lover. In fact, he had no less than nine rescue dogs himself. He witnessed heroic firefighter Andrew Klein pull a lifeless Nalu from the flames…

7. Billy Fernando

“I saw the firefighter, Mr. Klein, running toward the curbside grass area carrying something,” Fernando said to The Dodo. “I didn’t know what it was at first, but then I realized that it was a pet who had been trapped in the fire.”

NEXT: Nalu was in some SERIOUS trouble…

Fernando is a professional photographer and decided to film the dramatic events unfolding before his eyes. It’s a good thing that he did because what happened next really has to be seen to be believed…

8. Nalu Was Unconscious

“The dog was unconscious, limp and not moving at all,” Fernando added in his interview with The Dodo. Smoke inhalation is the most common cause of death in a fire. It wasn’t looking good for Nalu…

NEXT: Crystal thought the WORST had happened…

The moment Crystal saw Nalu’s lifeless body, she thought that the worst had happened. How could a dog that small and old be alive after inhaling smoke so thick that it had stopped her from going into the building?

9. Crystal Thought The Worst

“[Nalu’s] eyes were glazed over and he was not breathing and I assumed he was dead,” Crystal recounted in an interview. “The firefighter said, ‘I’m a positive person. Let’s just get him back.'”

NEXT: Klein makes an AMAZING decision…

If the fire department had arrived any more than a few minutes later, Nalu probably would have been dead by this point. Klein then made an unbelievable decision that only a true animal lover would have taken…

10. Nalu Gets Mouth-To-Mouth

Nalu wasn’t responding to just oxygen so Klein made the heroic decision to perform CPR. This dog had already beaten the odds to be pulled from the fire alive. Klein wasn’t going to let him die without a fight…

NEXT: This is HOW Nalu initially responded to CPR…

Despite what seemed like a promising rescue, Nalu did not respond to the CPR. He continued to lie lifeless on the grass. There was nothing that Crystal could do but look on in horror at her pooch fighting for his life…

11. It Didn’t Help

My heart is breaking for Crystal as I look at this picture. Nalu was ten years old. He’d been her companion for a decade and it looked like he was about to be cruelly and suddenly taken away from her…

NEXT: Crystal had been here BEFORE…

Crystal worked as a nurse and therefore she was no stranger to performing CPR and other life saving procedures herself. It also meant that she was more than aware of Nalu’s slim odds of survival…

12. Crystal Was In Shock

“[As I said beside the firefighter and Nalu I] was in shock. I’m a nurse and now I know how family members feel when they watch us do CPR on their family members. It’s awful.”

NEXT: But Klein REFUSED to give up…

The fact that Nalu had been found alive was a miracle. Klein continued to perform CPR, as a helpless Crystal watched on, hoping against hope that her beloved dog Nalu was going to be saved at the eleventh hour…

13. Klein Refused To Give Up

Minutes continued to pass. We’ve all seen the movies. When a person doesn’t respond to CPR quickly, the chances of them pulling through are slim and dogs are no different. But Klein had one more thing he could try…

NEXT: Nalu is given some EXTRA help breathing…

Amazingly, the Santa Monica Fire Department also keeps dog-sized oxygen masks with them at all times for incidents like this one. Nalu was being given the best possible chance, but would she pull through?

14. The Oxygen Mask

Crystal and Klein are pictured here watching Nalu as he is given the oxygen mask in a last ditch attempt to save his life. Poor Nalu must have been in a lot of pain; the smoke had obviously damaged his lungs…

NEXT: Something INCREDIBLE happens next…

Klein went on to use a combination of the oxygen mask and CPR and worked tirelessly to save Nalu. He was a true hero, even if Nalu didn’t make it. Then the most amazing thing happened…

15. Nalu Comes Around

The combination of CPR and the oxygen mask seemed to have worked! Nalu began to move for the first time since he was pulled from the fire. But would he be saved? There was no doubt that this was a very sick dog…

NEXT: Klein’s efforts HADN’T been in vain…

Even after CPR has been performed successfully, it doesn’t mean that the person or animal who has received it is going to survive. The smoke inhalation might have been too much for Nalu…

16. Nalu Is Saved

But it wasn’t. Nalu managed survived! It just goes to show that he was a fighter. “[T]he dog began breathing on its own and regained consciousness,” the fire department revealed. “[He] even regain[ed] the ability to walk around.”

NEXT: You’ll be SHOCKED at how long Nalu’s life was on the line for…

You’re probably wondering how long it took Klein to save Nalu. Try to have a guess! I can bet you that you’ll still be shocked by the answer. It makes Nalu’s survival seem all the more remarkable…

17. It Had Taken 20 Minutes

You read that right. Klien was performing CPR and giving Nalu the oxygen mask for a shocking twenty minutes. It’s safe to say that most people would have probably given up after less than this time, but not Klein!

NEXT: This is what Klein had to SAY about the rescue…

Firefighters are ordinary people who do extraordinary things. They’ve been proving that for years. Klein was a hero and he must have been delighted that he’d been able to save Nalu from the fire…

18. Klein Was A Hero

“[Time] is key, especially with a small dog,” the heroic firefighter said of the incident. “Failure was not an option.” He was an experienced serviceman and he knew exactly what he had to do to save Nalu!

NEXT: But HOW did Nalu fare after the fire?!

Nalu might have been saved, but he’d still gone through a very traumatic experience. What if his lungs had been damaged too much and he had to be put to sleep? Well, you’ll be glad to hear that didn’t happen.

19. Nalu Recovered

“He’s been coughing but right now he’s fine and he’s so happy and smiling,” Crystal said. So it looks like Nalu is set to make a full recovery. Judging by this picture, he’s going to have no trouble getting over his cough!

NEXT: Nalu and Klein are REUNITED…

Shortly after the dramatic rescue, Nalu and Klein were reunited on TV. As you can tell from this picture – taken from their appearance on ABC News – the two were delighted to see each other again!

20. A Happy Ending

“I’ve been on a number of animal rescues that did not come out the same way that Nalu’s story did,” Klein said to the New York Daily News. “To see him walking around wagging his tail was definitely a good feeling.”
