Hollywood’s Most Eye-Popping Movie Scenes That Had Us Reaching For The Pause Button…

Have you ever watched a movie and spotted something on-screen and gone “Woah! What was that!” before scrambling around for the remote control, pausing the movie, and rewinding back to that specific spot? Well if you have then you’ll understand how certain scenes become the most paused movie scenes ever. So what are the most paused moments of all time?

From steamy moments that we can’t help but replay to scenes where extras mess up big time, there’s a lot of pause-worthy moments in Hollywood history. Some movies even give us clues as to what will happen later on, or evidence that suggests new movies of the same franchise will be coming out soon. Let’s face it, we all love being the detectives when it comes to our favorite movies.

Do You Know Any Famous Paused Movie Scenes?

I can guarantee that will be a fair few scenes in here that you will be able to relate to so hard that you will probably smile or roll your eyes, knowing that someone – probably even YOU – has paused the tape in that exact moment. The infamous scene with Sharon Stone? Yep, it’s in here. Ever heard about those rumors about the Little Mermaid original? They’re all true. See for yourself…

If you have ever seen the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High, then you’ll know that nearly every single person watching the video paused it during the swimming scene with Linda and Stacy, and we can’t blame them…

1. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

In the story, Stacy’s big brother Brad is looking out for his sister Stacy and her friend Linda whilst the two girls splash around swimming in the pool. Phoebe Cates plays Linda Barrett, and when she climbs up the steps to get out the pool, we see her in a very small red bikini. Then she takes it off. Pause!

If you thought Phoebe Cates’ little strip off at the pool was steamy, then you’ll probably have found this even steamier. The movie Wild Things was never going to do well unless there was something in it viewers really wanted to see. Like two hot girls kissing…

2. Wild Things (1998)

It was as if a teenager dreamt this one up. Neve Campbell and Denise Richards absolutely destroyed any X-rating that Fast Times had by both making out with each other in the pool and then removing their bikini tops. It was the lesbian scene that everyone wanted to see and was probably the main reason why Wild Things ever was a success.

The moment where Sharon Stone crosses her legs over one another in the movie Basic Instinct had every single human being lurching for their remote control.

3. Basic Instinct (1992)

Sharon Stone was fully dressed, or so it appeared, in the scene, but then, when she did the classic leg crossover, the entire audience got a whole lot more than they expected. From that moment onwards, Basic Instinct became the movie everyone wanted to see, or perhaps Sharon Stone’s lack of underwear was the thing that everyone wanted to see.

If you have ever seen the movie Scanners, then you will remember that the movie was both written and directed by David Cronenberg, and it was the first movie he did that really began his career.

4. Scanners (1981)

The whole entire movie revolves around psychic powers, giving it an edge of being a more science -fiction horror surrounding a mystery then an action movie. In one particular scene, Michael Ironside somehow explodes a man’s head by using psychic powers.  The thing is, it happened so fast and was so gory, we had to pause it, rewind it, and see it one more time.

NEXT: Look closely, can you see this dark figure in the background?

Did you ever watch Cabin in the Woods when it came out in 2012? Well then, you’ll remember that moment that the scientists are deciphering what will happen to the main characters…

5. Cabin In The Woods (2012)

In the background, there is a white board with a list of different creatures on it that the scientists are controlling. But due to the extensive list, lots of members of the audience have paused the movie to read the list to see what else they have in their grasps including mutants, zombies, clowns and witches.

I was pretty shocked when I read this, but it appears that in the classic Wizard of Oz movie, in one particular scene, something is not quite right.

6. Wizard of Oz (1939)

Since the movie was made and released back in 1939, it seems almost crazy that so many people spotted this in a particular scene. But it happens out that one of the backgrounds of the movie shows what the official story describes as a bird, but lots of viewers have interpreted or believe to be a munchkin that has hanged himself.

Referred to as a “fantasy / cult” movie, Teen Wolf hit the screens with the brilliant Michael J. Fox in 1985. It’s now a TV series among other things, but guess where people pause this movie?

7. Teen Wolf (1985)

Somehow, at the very end of the movie, just a few moments before crowds begin to cheer and whoop, viewers notice that there was a man stood in the background of the scene, with his pants down. It might be a great family movie, but how on earth that managed to get into the movie is beyond me! Was he just flying low, or… is there something else we can see?

NEXT: Which Disney movie showed a little too much flesh?

We all love a good Disney movie, a wonderful sing-along and a beautiful Disney princess. But do we remember the original Little Mermaid movie where there are more than a few subliminal messages?

8. The Little Mermaid (1989)

There’s the coral shaped like a penis, the entire package in King Titan’s golden castle, and lastly of course there is the priest who gets a little too excited at the wedding. How on earth those managed to get into a kids’ movie is pretty hysterical, but also highly inappropriate. No wonder there have been a few edits in the new versions!

There were a few scenes in Fight Club that were a little… how shall we say this… pornographic in their imagery? The material that David Fincher enjoyed using in the movie definitely made viewers pause it.

9. Fight Club (1999)

But it wasn’t only that that was apparently wrong in a movie that could have been suitable for younger ages, but the actual plot line had a few things in it too that confused the viewers with the eagle eyes. Did you ever spot Brad Pitt on screen in scenes before we even met his character in the movie?

It’s quite obvious why many viewers watching the movie Total Recall had to pause their screens during a certain scene, and that scene happened to have a lady with three breasts in it.

10. Total Recall (1990)

We love watching movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger in them, especially where he is beastily destroying things or shouting in his strong German accent. But trust me, nobody was pausing this movie to see Arnold Schwarzenegger. What everybody wanted to see was the three-breasted lady, with her nipples on display. What’s better than a pair of boobs? Three of them!

NEXT: Margot Robbie “opens up” in this steamy scene…

We just had to pause it and take another look when Alfred Hitchcock decided he wanted to do this in one of the final moments of his movie Psycho.

11. Psycho (1960)

It really is a classic this one, and there are lots of moments in it that we just want to pause and really take a look at. It’s the moment where the rather gory murderer Norman Bates finally gets arrested and taken away by the police. He then turns to look directly at the camera, and we can just about make out the image of a skull on top of his face for a split second. Spooky!

It’s the scene from the Wolf of Wall Street where Margot Robbie gives Leonardo DiCaprio’s character blue balls, so as to speak.

12. Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Margot Robbie’s character in martin Scorsese’s movie really transformed her into the sex icon of the 21st Century, along with Scarlett Johansson. But this is the one moment where many people pause the movie, as Margot Robbie touches herself. In the movie, Jordan Belfort (Leo DiCaprio) then points out that the security guards can see.

Well, Disney have really outdone themselves. They have two movies on this list already! But did ever spot anything a little bit odd in the famous classic the Lion King?

13. The Lion King (1994)

I’m about to tell you what’s up with this movie. You know that rock where baby Simba gets held up to all of Africa on? Well, on that same rock at night time, Simba’s mother and father are watching the stars, and the dust and falling stars in the air definitely spell out the word “sex”. There’s no denying it. Apparently a statement says that it spells the letters “SFX” but we all disagree.

NEXT: The infamous Star Wars moment fans watched again and again…

This comedy-drama got all sorts of reviews when it first came out in 1997, but the only thing that everybody who had seen the movie could talk about was the size of Mark Wahlberg’s… well, ding-dong let’s say.

14. Boogie Nights (1997)

So the moment it came out on video, audiences had their remotes at the ready to pause it on the exact moment where Mark Wahlberg takes off his underwear for all the camera team to see. The movie was directed by Thomas Anderson, and this scene alone kept everyone talking about it. But it is true that it was in fact a prosthetic, and Mark Wahlberg’s penis is not that size.

This movie really was made for all those kids who absolutely loved the arcades in the 1980s, and that’s why there were a few little salutes to certain arcade characters.

15. Tron (1982)

The actor Jeff Bridges who plays Kevin Flynn / Clu in the movie can be spotted in one scene (pause the screen to make certain) with Pac-Man. Yep, it’s the truth, Pac-Man is there eating all of those yellow dots just in the background of the screen that Jeff is staring into. Can you believe it?

The entire collection of Star Wars movies has many moments which we just have to pause and replay to see for ourselves. But when somebody or other spotted this in the 1977 movie, we enjoyed it a little too much.

16. Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)

Yep, that’s the stormtrooper who was marching through and was definitely nursing a bad headache for a week after absolutely smashing his head on the frame of the door he was walking through. No wonder they all need helmets if they are that clumsy. But we couldn’t help but think that there was no wonder Jedi’s were so much better than them.

NEXT: Is this the sexiest cartoon in the history of Hollywood?

Well, it’s time to meet the Galactic Senate, but who is in need in this classic scene from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace? There’s no surprise that this drew a few fans a little bit wild!

17. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999)

Three aliens that were of E.T.’s species were added to the scene in the Galactic Senate, as E.T. was Steven Spielberg’s movie. It came after Steven Spielberg had done the same thing for George Lucas, by putting one of his characters from E.T. in a Yoda costume to give a little nod of respect to one another, as well as to tickle fans pink.

At the very end of the movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we see Rey hand over the lightsaber she has used throughout the whole movie, that used to belong to Luke Skywalker.

18. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

As Rey approaches Luke Skywalker, there’s a shot in the scene where Luke stands gravely stood by a piece of rock that looks as if it could be a grave stone. Many fans have paused this movie time and time again, trying to work out why Luke Skywalker is standing there by himself, and what that rock is, if it’s anything. Soon, I am sure they will find out.

It is known that Jessica Rabbit is probably the most sexualized cartoon character to ever have existed, but can you believe that everyone paused their screens in the scene where she goes commando?!

19. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988)

I’m not sure what people were looking at particularly, but this scene had Jessica Rabbit dancing an awful lot. If you paused this, let me just remind you, that somebody drew her. She is just a cartoon, and that is it. But feel free to stare at a sexualized drawing if that’s what you fancy.

NEXT: Was this a ghost, or a misplaced prop?

Do you remember watching the comedy Three Men and a Baby? Well if you do, you might remember how weird it is that when the credits roll, the director’s name states that he is Spock, or in other words, actor Leonard Nimoy.

20. Three Men and a Baby (1987)

Firstly let me tell you that Leonard Nimoy did direct this movie, so that’s weird enough, but one scene makes it look as if there is a boy stood behind the characters staring at them from another parallel universe, it’s creepy. Apparently, it was actually just a cardboard cutout of a man, or specifically, Ted Danson. Weird, huh?

When Jurassic World came out, we were all very excited. But did anyone else spot this scene that we couldn’t help but pause and laugh our socks off at?

21. Jurassic World (2015)

So, pterodactyls are flying around the park and people are screaming and running away. But not this man. If you can believe it, this man is Jimmy Buffett, and yes, he is carrying two margaritas, one in either hand. He is absolutely determined to get his drink down before the dinosaurs eat him alive. He’s still looking for the straws too.

Nowadays, Marvel put in little clues into all their movies by the number, referencing other movies of theirs ten times over. But back in 2008, fans were delighted to spot this…

22. Iron Man (2008)

Whilst we have Robert Downey Jr. suiting up in his Iron Man outfit if you pause it, you can actually see something rather cheeky that nobody would be able to spot unless they had a really great pair of eyes on them. Behind him to the left in the scene, is Captain America’s shield sitting half created on the side. It took three years after Iron Man until Captain America: The First Avenger then hit the screens.

NEXT: Which Disney movie “accidentally” showed some topless action?

Remember when the Superman movie with Henry Cavill came out in 2013? Well, Man of Steel had a few surprises in it that were incredibly subtle…

23. Man of Steel (2013)

The one we particularly have to mention, is the reference to the Batman-Superman movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It might have also been three years prior to the release of the crossover of superheroes, but in Man of Steel, you might have seen this pointer – whilst fighting in space, Superman lobs a satellite… a satellite with the Wayne Enterprises logo!

It might have been animated back in 1977, but Disney still loved to sneak in some cheeky little extras in all of their kids movies, even back then.

24. The Rescuers (1977)

In the movie the Rescuers, Disney managed to get a couple of very naughty and noteworthy shots in of a naked woman getting changed in her room. How on earth did they manage to do this?! It’s in the scene where the little mice are flying past a building in their empty can of sardines, and she’s there in the window, totally starkers! Cheeky, huh?

I loved watching the Indiana Jones movies as a kid, and this first one that came out in 1981 had one moment that people just couldn’t believe.

25. Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

The character of Dr. René Belloq is a notorious one in the Indiana Jones movies, and in the first one Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark the character is played by Paul Freeman. Now, Paul Freeman is a great actor, and even greater for this moment. In one scene, he continues to deliver his line, even whilst a fly crawls into his mouth. We all thought it was gross, but Paul kept going. Good on you, Mr. Freeman.

NEXT: Amanda Byrnes goes to eye-popping lengths to prove she’s all woman…

The first appearance of the alien in the movie Signs happens all too quickly, so quickly in fact, that we still don’t really know if we saw the alien move or not.

26. Signs (2002)

What did that alien look like anyway? Well, it was time for us to grab our remotes then pause and rewind the movie once again. And yep, it was exactly as we had thought, perhaps hoped, and definitely expected. A scary looking green beast that nobody could mistake for anything other than an alien. Cool.

Directed by two brothers, Ethan and Joel Coen, this movie farce which is also serves as a drama does feature some violence, but it all happens so quickly, you barely see a thing.

27. Burn After Reading (2008)

That’s a good thing, if, like me you really can’t stand violence or any sort of gore. But Burn After Reading was one movie that made an awful lot of people reach for their remotes to stop the movie, rewind it, and play back certain moments because of how fast they happened. Take for instance when Brad Pitt’s character is shot whilst he’s in the closet, it happens os fast, you wonder if it actually hit him or not.

If you have ever read any of William Shakespeare, you might have figured out that the movie She’s the Man is literally a retelling of Twelve Night, where Viola dresses as her twin brother Sebastian and pretends to be a boy.

28. She’s The Man (2006)

It’s the exact same story in She’s the Man, but a modern day version where Viola dresses as her brother to get into the opposing school’s male football team. But when there’s a mix up and her real brother shows up, and the head teacher figures out that Viola is in fact a woman, things start to get a little out of hand. Well, the real Sebastian drops his pants to prove he’s a man, and Viola then shows her boobs to prove she’s a woman. At that moment, every teen paused their screen to see if they could see anything.

Luckily for Amanda Bynes, nobody could actually see anything. But that didn’t stop everyone from pausing the movie to check!

NEXT: Fans were pausing to catch a glimpse of the “King of Demons”…

One of the most anticipated movies of 2016 was Finding Dory. Fans of Finding Nemo (2003) had to wait almost ten years to find out more about their favorite fish who suffered from short term memory loss…

29. Finding Dory (2016)

But what fans didn’t expect was for one of the villains from Finding Nemo to make a surprise reappearance in a background shot in the movie. Darla was the dentist’s niece who terrorised the fish in the first movie, and she’s pictured here in the background of a shot when Dory is in quarantine. Pixar is famed for leaving easter eggs like this in their movies, and it’s a nice nod to the original movie.

As we all know, movie fans love to press pause during steamy scenes so that they can get a better glimpse of their favorite actors and actresses in next to nothing. That’s why this scene from Before I Go To Sleep is paused so often…

30. Before I Go To Sleep (2014)

Nicole Kidman is one of the most beautiful women in the world. In this scene, she can be seen completely naked, and people watching the movie have consistently paused it trying to get a better glimpse of her gorgeous body! Sadly for them, however, this screenshot of the movie shows that she’s not completely nude on camera, but that didn’t stop people pausing it…

There’s few horror movies that have consistently terrified people as much as The Exorcist. Demonic possession is one of the worst things that can happen to a person. Viewers were quick to realise the demon could be seen if they paused the movie at the right time…

31. The Exorcist (1973)

Be quick with the pause button the next time you watch The Exorcist, and you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of the demon Pazuzu. I think it makes the movie a lot more creepy that the demon can only be seen if you’re quick!

NEXT: It was one of the most successful movies of all time, but viewers couldn’t get over this hot scene…

There’s few movies which are as synonyms with the phrase ‘cult classic’ as much as Pulp Fiction. There’s a lot of explicit scenes in the movie, namely of drug taking. But this one’s paused for a much saucier reason…

32. Pulp Fiction (1994)

Bruce Willis is one of the hottest men in Hollywood. It comes as no surprise then that fans of Pulp Fiction were hitting pause when they realised that his genitals could be seen if they paused this shower scene at just the right moment!

Tarzan has always held a special place in my heart. I remember going to see it when it was released in 1999, but it what I didn’t notice was that there’s a scene where it collides with another of Disney’s best-loved movies…

33. Tarzan (1999)

If you’re thinking that the teapot and cup in this scene look familiar, that’s because they are. They might not have faces like they do in Beauty and the Beast (1991), but that’s Mrs Potts and her son Chip! I have so many questions. How on Earth did they end up in the jungle?!

When it comes to movies from the ’90s that people just can’t get enough of, there’s few that come to mind faster than Titanic. The world fell in love with it’s protagonists who managed to get together despite being world’s apart…

34. Titanic (1997)

First class socialite Rose Dawson couldn’t resist dirt poor steerage passenger Jack Dawson’s charm. As an art fan, she adored his drawings, especially the ones he’d made whilst in Paris of naked women, and, before sealing the deal in the back of a car, she asks him to draw her “like one of his French girls.” As we all know, the drawing plays an important role in the movie as well when it’s recovered from the wreck!

NEXT: Margot Robbie is back in yet another jaw-dropping scene…

This is another scene where a beautiful women had viewers grabbing their remotes to pause the movie. It’s the second time that Margot Robbie has appeared on this list. That’s testament to the fact that movie lovers just can’t get enough of her…

35. Suicide Squad (2016)

Playing the evil Harley Quinn in the 2016 superhero hit movie Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie had viewers drooling when she seductively put on her top in this scene. It also shows off her amazing body, so I can’t blame people for hitting pause!

As we’ve already seen, people were quick to pause Finding Dory (2016) when they realised that there was a scene that referenced Finding Nemo, but observant viewers of the latter realised that it referenced movie altogether….

36. Finding Nemo (2003)

Another Pixar classic is Toy Story (1995), and it’s referenced here in Finding Nemo thanks to a Buzz Lightyear action figure that’s been left lying outside a toy chest. But hey! It’s totally understandable as Buzz is a super popular toy in Pixar’s world.

I love the ’80s, and there’s few movies that epitomise this era better than Labyrinth. I first saw the movie as a teenager, and it sparked an obsession with David Bowie that’s yet to wane. But there was one scene in the movie that I just had to pause…

37. Labyrinth (1986)

Bearing in mind that Labyrinth is a kid’s movie, people have consistently been confused by a scene which features a goblin urinating into a small pond. It just doesn’t seem appropriate, but then again David Bowie’s crotch isn’t censored era, and it’s scenes like these which have led to the movie’s continued popularity. Long live the Goblin King!

When you’re a kid there’s few Disney characters as relatable as Peter Pan. He didn’t want to grow up and, as adults, I’m sure there’s times when we wished we never did. There’s something very grown up about his shadow in the Disney movie…

38. Peter Pan (1953)

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Peter Pan’s shadow has an additional phallic quality in Disney’s classic 1953 adaptation of J. M. Barrie’s classic children’s novel. It’s a blink and you’ll miss it moment that probably went over the heads of most kids.
