The hugely momentous occasion that was the royal wedding of former eligible bachelor, Prince Harry, and former Suits actress, Meghan Markle, was absolutely stunning from beginning to end.
The more than two billion viewers who tuned in from around the world watched in eager anticipation as the loved-up pair finally got hitched.
Here are the highlights from the special day:
As to be expected, the day spawned a whole host of memes and Tweets gushing over the highly-anticipated wedding and also making light of it in the way only social media users can.
They poked fun out of the adorable excitement of one of the two pageboys who helped carry the veil down the aisle.
We also caught sight of one of the groom’s exes, Chelsy Davy, and her supposedly sour face.
Unsurprisingly the jokes kept rolling in.
“It could have been me,” was a definite favorite.
There were plenty of speculations as to what Chelsy might think about the cameras panning to her precisely at this moment.
Jokes aside, we all had a lot of empathy for her.
However, as everyone took their seats in the beautiful and traditional venue of Windsor Castle, people became far more concerned about a different member of the wedding party.
We’re all aware that Meghan’s estranged family did not receive any invitations to the wedding, especially considering their media-hungry behavior in the build-up to the social event of the year, such as the video below where they are embarrassed and shut down during a live interview:
I wonder why they weren’t invited??
But one man she did want present was her father. However, he pulled out of the wedding days before, citing medical reasons. Although, many people believe he was left humiliated after it was revealed he had staged paparazzi photos – such as the one below – of him researching the wedding.
Yes, the only member of Meghan’s family to make it to the wedding was the mother of the bride, Doria Ragland. Ragland accompanied her daughter to the castle along with some other guests.
But when Ragland was inside the chapel, viewers couldn’t help but notice that Doria had seemingly been isolated from the rest of wedding party.
But, as it turns out, there is a very important reason for this. Royal expert, Alastair Bruce, explained the reasoning behind the decision to Town and Country:
“It’s very much a matter for the bride and the groom. They would have sought counsel from The Lord Chamberlain’s Office when deciding the seating. They will assist. They know the layout of St George’s Chapel, and they will guide him.”
So the truth is, the couple were actually just following tradition, and unfortunately because none of Dora’s family members were in attendance (aside from the bride, of course) she appeared “alone”.
Yes, considering this wedding was a monumental royal event, tradition was of the utmost importance.
A statement from Kensington Palace released before the ceremony took place, placed emphasis on the idea of order and custom during the momentous occasion:
“They hope this short journey will provide an opportunity for more people to come together around Windsor and to enjoy the atmosphere of this special day.
Following the service, there will be a reception at St George’s Hall for the couple and the guests from the congregation.
“Later that evening, the Prince of Wales will give a private evening reception for the couple and their close friends and family.
In addition to having the support of The Queen, his father The Prince of Wales, and his brother Prince William as best man, Prince Harry is also keen to involve his mother’s family in his wedding.”
“All three siblings of Diana, Princess of Wales will be in attendance and Lady Jane Fellowes will give the reading.
Prince Harry and Ms. Markle both feel honoured Lady Jane will be representing her family and helping to celebrate the memory of the late Princess on the wedding day.”
So there you have it: the Royal Wedding was never going to be your average marriage ceremony now was it?
In any case, we wish the couple a long and happy marriage and (hopefully) plenty of children along the way.
