You know, even though it looks like a really cushy job, being a talk-show host is probably really hard. Thinking about it, I’m not sure I could do it. You’d think that anybody would be capable of renting a studio, hiring some cameras, and exchange witty banter and swap pleasantries with celebrities on a comfy couch. But I imagine that the role requires a lot more finesse than that.
Being a decent host is actually a bit of a thankless task when you think about it. They’re supposed to guide their guests effortlessly from topic to topic, while keeping the conversation interesting and entertaining. You don’t really notice a good one, but everyone recognises a bad one straight away.
Perhaps that’s why comedian Ellen DeGeneres has been so successful over the years. She must be one of the most experienced talk-show hosts working today, and her huge ratings are as much down to her sweet disposition and sharp wit as they are her skills in front of camera on live TV.
She’s got plenty of critical acclaim to boast about too. Not only has she managed to win multiple Emmys, but she’s also hosted the awards show, as well as the Grammys, the and the Academy Awards in 2014, where her famous celebrity selfie managed to break Twitter, and received the presidential medal of freedom for Barack Obama last year. But now it seems as though she might just have met her match in the form of Jessica Simpson, who gave an interview so bewildering that Ellen actually had to pause for a second just to compose herself.
The 36-year-old singer, actress and businesswoman was invited on the show to discuss maternal issues, her burgeoning clothing empire, and music. But halfway through the segment things started to get a bit … erratic. Things first became a bit awkward when Simpson was unable to remember how long she’d been with her husband Eric Johnson, and stated “Seven years now. Well, coming on seven … actually, no.”
Then she took things a step further by revealing that Eric sometimes gives her massages in her sleep, stating: “I don’t know, his hands somehow find me” and by rambling on about mermaids, stating: “They had … manhandlers. It’s not called manhandlers … No … they had to be carried if they had to pee … cos they can’t pee on my children in the pool. They pick ‘em up, and carry ‘em … It’s a, it’s a business.” Things got so weird that eventually Ellen had to pause for breath and gather her thoughts.
It’s clear that Simpson is a pretty tough interviewee, but a number of other viewers have also questioned Simpson’s behaviour on social media. YouTube commenter Mirra Miles stated “I think Jessica was very nervous and it got to her. She hasn’t been interviewed in a long time. It was awkward and maybe if she would have stop for a moment and breath and started over,” while another chimed in “I’ll have what she’s having.”
But this isn’t the first time Ellen’s suffered from a momentary loss of composure on-camera. Check out her reaction to an ordinary teacher’s incredible act of kindness on her show.
