One of the most difficult things about being a parent of young children is coming to terms with the fact that they are incredibly vulnerable. And this isn’t helped by the fact that their adventurous selves are always climbing things, running around recklessly and playing with things that could potentially pose a risk to their physical wellbeing.
Kids get up to all sorts and it’s difficult and pretty much impossible, to always keep tabs on whatever they are doing.
Here are plenty more reasons why parenting is pretty tricky in 2018:
And I’m sorry to say it, but it appears that it’s not just the more “obviously” dangerous activities that you as a parent have to be wary about your kids engaging in. Apparently, something as seemingly mundane and innocent as a child wearing a rubber band on their arm could have serious physical consequences.
It’s true – a little girl experienced the unthinkable when a rubber band began growing into the flesh of her arm. No one noticed it had been digging into her skin until it had become so attached to her flesh that it could only be removed with a surgical procedure.
The four-year-old, who has been identified only by the name, Le Le, was taken to hospital by her parents after they eventually noticed the red ring encircling her arm.
They told staff they had not realized that the initially benign-looking elastic band had become embedded in her right arm until after her flesh and skin had grown around it.
Le Le, from Linquan county in China’s Eastern Anhui Province, was initially taken to see a doctor by her grandparents, who she lives with, at the start of the year. However, they were not immediately able to identify what her condition was, and ended up diagnosing it as some sort of infection that may have stemmed from an allergy.
When the state of her arm worsened, the girl’s mom and dad then decided to take her to the Children’s Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine in Hangzhou, the capital of the neighboring Zhejiang Province.
At the hospital, Doctor Ye Wensong told Le Le’s parents that the “bangle-like” growth within her flesh most likely occurred as a result of the rubber band becoming trapped in her flesh because she had been wearing it for so long.
According to reports, her parents did not immediately accept Doctor Ye’s theory but agreed that their little girl should stay in the hospital for further treatment and analysis.
When X-ray scans were taken of her right arm, it was clear that there was some sort of foreign object within her flesh. Shortly afterward, the rubber band was produced during a surgical procedure.
In his 20 years in the medical profession, Doctor Ye said he had seen only one other case of this nature before, and suggested that the risks had entirely escaped her grandparents’ awareness.
“Some elders also like to tie thin red strings around children’s necks, wrists or fingers for good luck, but the practice comes with risks,” he said. “Thin strings and elastic bands can easily be concealed in the flaps of the child’s skin. Some young kids are still too young to talk, and the band goes unnoticed by their guardians.”
It’s pretty harrowing that something as seemingly benign as a child wearing a rubber band around her arm could lead to such serious internal injuries. Le Le is currently still in the hospital recovering from the procedure, and we wish her all the best in the future.
