Being a celebrity is a dream for the majority of us. After all, the stars of music and film are some of the most revered people in society (well, if Instagram is anything to go by) and talent isn’t always required. If you happen to be lucky enough to be born into America’s First Family of reality TV, the Kardashian-Jenner clan, your surname alone will set you up for life.
But, generally speaking, most celebrities have worked hard to get where they are today, and that’s certainly the case for former wrestler turned actor Dwayne Johnson AKA “The Rock”. After a failed football career (even the most successful people in the world can have false starts), he went on to become one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, and after retiring from the ring in the early noughties, he launched an acting career which has made him one of the richest men on the planet.
According to the 2018 Forbes rich list, he was worth $124M in July of this year and this number is only increasing with each passing day. Unlike a lot of other seriously rich people out there (I’m looking at you Jeff Bezos!), Johnson hasn’t forgotten where he came from, and he’s made a point of using his immense wealth to show gratitude to his nearest and dearest.
One of these people is Johnson’s long-term stunt double and cousin Tanoai Reed. As the picture above demonstrates, the pair could easily be mistaken for twins and since 2001, they have worked tirelessly together on a number of hit movies.
While Johnson might be, on the surface, the main star in these films, he’s more than aware of the role Reed has played in his success, and he decided to share with his 11 million-plus Instagram followers the surprise he gave him as a thank you.
The 46-year-old actor shared a short video of him giving his 44-year-old cousin the surprise, captioning it, “Over the course of my career, my stunt double (and cousin) Tanoai Reed has broken multiple bones, severed tendons, torn ligaments & just been an overall dominating badass achieving several ‘Stuntman of the Year’ honors.”
The clip begins with Johnson pretending to interview Reed about their time working together. “Scorpion King was our first movie together,” Reed said before Johnson interjected, saying, “When I saw him, I was like oh my god he looks like my twin.”
“The truth is, he’s been an incredible partner and brother to me,” Johnson added.
The actor then decided to show his stunt double his appreciation with an incredible surprise:
“It’s been an honor, uso, and I want to say from the bottom of my heart, I love you and I thank you and enjoy your new truck,” Johnson said. Reed then turned around and welled up when he realized what he had been gifted.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, “uso” isn’t a typo. It was Johnson acknowledging his and Reed’s Samoan roots. The term means “brother”.
Naturally, the clip went down a storm on social media, with countless people praising Johnson for his kindness. It also acted as a poignant reminder that no matter how successful you are in life, you should never forget who helped you get there.
“Besides being a great actor and having great muscles… you have a huge heart. Beautiful gesture. I am your fan. Big hug,” wrote Instagram user gabbibastoss.
“I’m convinced The Rock is the best human currently occupying this planet. [For] someone who’s the highest paid actor in Hollywood he’s still the hardest working and most down to Earth. Can not [sic] help but love the guy,” added darrenquigley2016.
However, at least one Instagram user did question why Reed simply didn’t buy himself a truck and 1.27o wrote, “[I’m going to] say it since nobody else will you [sic] you stunt double for the highest paid celebrity and you couldn’t get a truck?”
But, as well all know, it’s the thought that counts, regardless of how wealthy you are.
This kind gesture is not the only thing which Johnson has hit the headlines for in recent days. He also appeared in a hilarious clip with co-star Emily Blunt to reveal that they had begun filming their new movie Jungle Cruise.
The video initially begins with Blunt showing off the movie set before she is suddenly interrupted by Johnson. The former wrestler then compares their on-screen pairing to that of “Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.”
Emily retorts, “They were never in the jungle!”
The 35-year-old actress then appears to walk off camera flustered before returning and that’s when she reveals that she was “just kidding” and warmly hugs Johnson. Then he jokingly pretends that she’s just pinched his butt!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Johnson will play a boat captain who takes his sister (Blunt) and her brother (Whitehall) on a mission to find a tree believed to possess healing powers.”
“Wild animals and a competing German expedition figure into the proceedings.”
Now, I don’t know about you, but this video has certainly whet my appetite for Jungle Cruise. Any adventure moving starring an actor as brilliant as Johnson is bound to be a hit!
