As you probably already know, yesterday was Father’s Day, and families across the world celebrated the bad jokes and awkward dress sense that all dads seemingly possess. Over the years, I’ve celebrated many with my dad, and the holiday is known for plenty of tributes and homemade mugs for the men primarily responsible for shaping us as people.
Father’s Day can be a day for joy and celebration, but this doesn’t apply to everyone. Men tragically pass on and leave their families behind, and some people are left with a slightly bittersweet feeling every Father’s Day.
Chris Pratt is one of the biggest movie stars around at the moment, and he has a four-year-old son named Jack with fellow movie star Anna Faris. Unfortunately, Pratt lost his own dad some time ago, and this Father’s Day, he paid an emotional tribute to his late father.
Chris Pratt’s father, Dan Pratt, died in 2014 after struggling with multiple sclerosis for many years. The 37-year-old was filming Jurassic World at the time, and opened up to GQ magazine about coping with Dan’s death, as well as revealing that his father showed his love in different and subtle ways.
“I knew being the lead in the movie that I was really responsible for everybody’s attitude, so I compartmentalized it all and dealt with it in my own way, but not openly for people to see. I got pretty angry and got drunk and almost got in a fight with a drug dealer outside of my hotel room.
[…] In his own way [my dad] let me know that he was proud of me. He didn’t really react in any way, one way or another, but he was definitely proud. If I was on TV, he watched everything I was in. So it felt like I was able to communicate with him through doing work that was on TV.
This year, in the third year since his father’s passing, Chris Pratt took to Twitter to pay a loving tribute to his father this Father’s Day.
Pratt has talked in the past about his father’s “old school” style of parenting, but this loving and emotional tribute to his dad showed the appreciation Pratt has for his old man. On Twitter, the tweet has been shared nearly 2,000 times, and many other users showed their support to Pratt on what must be a very bittersweet day for the movie star.
In the three years since Dan’s passing, Chris Pratt has used social media to talk about his dad before. In 2015, around a year after Dan succumbed to MS, the former Parks and Recreation cast member posted a photo of the Pratt family on a fishing trip, with Chris joining his brother Cully alongside Dan Pratt.
Chris Pratt’s ascension to Hollywood prominence coincided with his father’s passing; 2014 was also the year that Guardians of the Galaxy was released to critical acclaim, and his star has only risen since. Pratt has never forgotten his father, however, and I think it’s fair to say that Dan Pratt would be proud of his son’s achievements so far in his life and career.
