In 1994, Forrest Gump was released to great critical acclaim after raking in $667.9 million at the box office. The comedy-drama would see Tom Hanks’ fame skyrocket, but the rest of the cast haven’t seen the same effect on their careers.
Over 23 years have now passed since the movie hit our screens and inevitably a lot has changed. The main difference is the appearance of the cast, who are now barely recognizable over two decades later. In fact, the young members of the cast are so dramatically different that you could bump into them in the street and not have any clue that they were once part of one of the world’s most viewed movie.
Be warned though, if you feel as though the 90s were only yesterday, this will be a rude awakening to you. Be prepared to feel extremely old…
Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump
Of course, we are all familiar with what Tom Hanks looks like today. The 61-year-old actor is one of Hollywood’s greatest icons, with huge blockbusters such as Cast Away, Toy Story, Saving Private Ryan and Captain Phillips to his name. However, it is not until you stop to really look, that you realize just how much the two-time Academy Award winning actor has changed.
Hanks’ films have grossed more than $9 billion worldwide, making him the fourth highest grossing actor of all time, only behind Hollywood heavyweights Harrison Ford, Samuel L. Jackson and Morgan Freeman. However, his ranking on the list could soon change as the actor continues to appear in big movies such as the upcoming Toy Story 4.
So now the most important cast member has been revealed, let’s take a look at his co-stars…
Robin Wright as Jenny Curran
Robin Wright may be more familiar to you in modern times as Clare Underwood in Netflix’s hugely popular original series, House of Cards, in which she plays the fierce First Lady of the United States. Or, she may be more recognizable as the feisty General Antiope in the box office smash hit Wonder Woman.
Wright owes her success to her breakthrough role in Forrest Gump, after she had to turn down the prominent role of Maid Marian in the 1991 epic Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves upon discovering she was pregnant with her first child. Then in 1993, she had to turn down a role as Tom Cruise’s wife in The Firm due to her second pregnancy.
Had she appeared in those two films, she may never have been cast as Jenny Curran!
Mykelti Williamson as Bubba
Williamson had an impressive career as a child actor, but it wasn’t until he was cast as the lovable Bubba in Forrest Gump that he became a household name. However, a few years after Forrest Gump was released, Willliamson found his name in the news for a very different reason…
In 1998, Williamson was acquitted of attempted manslaughter in the stabbing of his ex-wife’s companion. Williamson was accused of stalking his ex-wife and stabbing her friend with a butcher’s knife after flying into a rage. But, jurors found him not guilty of the crime.
Gary Sinise as Lieutenant Dan
Gary Sinise was unforgettable for his role in Forrest Gump in which he played Lieutenant Dan, Forrest’s platoon leader who loses both his legs in an ambush. Forrest saves him against his will and the remainder of the film sees the character go on a journey of acceptance of his condition.
When filming was finished for Forrest Gump, Sinise embarked upon a mission to support veterans charities. In 2004, he even formed his own band, Lt. Dan Band and tours military events, performing for disabled veterans.
But, it is the young stars growth that will make you feel really old…
Hanna Hall as Young Jenny
A nine-year-old Hanna Hall was responsible for delivering one of the most iconic lines in cinematic history, when she called out “Run Forrest, run!”. At the time it was anticipated that Hall would go on to become a hugely successful star in Hollywood. However, now 33-year-old, Hall has preferred to keep a low profile.
Following Forrest Gump, Hall auditioned for a role in The Virgin Suicides, but at 15-years-old she was considered too young for the part and Kristen Dunst was cast instead. Hall then appeared in a smattering of films, most recently she had a small part in The Masters of Sex.
Michael Conner Humphreys as Young Forrest
Michael Conner Humphreys was the inspiration behind Tom Hanks portrayal of Forrest Gump. Hanks modelled Forrest’s voice on Humphreys, who naturally talks with a broad Southern accent, just like Forrest does in the movie.
After Forrest Gump, Humphreys chose not to pursue a career in acting. Instead, he followed in the footsteps of his character and joined the army. Unsurprisingly, whilst in the army he was nicknamed “Gump” by fellow soldiers.
Haley Joel Osment as Forrest Jr.
Haley Joel Osment’s is one of Hollywood’s most recognizable child stars after his critically acclaimed performance in The Sixth Sense, in which he was nominated for an Academy Award. But it all started with Forrest Gump which was his debut film performance.
Osment was talent scouted at four years old whilst shopping in IKEA with his mother in 1992. Now 29 years old, he has many notable film roles to his name, but nothing will match to his early career.
Sally Field as Mrs. Gump
Mrs. Gump was the mother we all wished we had. Fiercely supportive of her son, and willing to do anything for him to succeed, Mrs. Gump is the underrated hero of the story. However, our love for the character is heavily due to Field’s incredible performance. But what else would you expect from a two time Academy Award winner?
