While it’s probably too early to say what his lasting legacy might be, Barack Obama will definitely go down as one of the most historic Presidents of the United States. While George Washington was the very first, Abraham Lincoln led America through the Civil War while FDR and Harry Truman defended freedom in the Second World War, Barack Obama became the first-ever African American to reside in the White House, defeating John McCain and Mitt Romney in successive elections.
Last year, we saw the first in what could be many biopics about the 44th President of the United States. Barry came out on Netflix December 16, and took a look at Obama’s life in 1981 at Colombia University, a full 27 years before he would be elected president. It’s unlikely to be the last, either; and if there’s another movie that depicts Barack Obama, the man himself has a pretty good idea of who he’d like to play him.
The mystery of who will play Barack Obama in a movie in the future was made slightly clearer in an unlikely way; via the British comedian and personality James Corden. Previously on the British sitcom Gavin and Stacey as well as the host of the Late Show With James Corden, the 38-year-old has a strong reputation as an entertainer, and funny one at that.
Recently he’s teamed up with Apple Music to start up a new show based off the highly successful segment Carpool Karaoke on the Late Show, and on the very first episode, he welcomed none other than Will Smith.
As you might expect, Will Smith was his usual fun-loving, exuberant self, crashing a wedding and at one point riding a helicopter. The 48-year-old rapper and actor also revealed that he was talking to a certain former president about the possibility of playing him in a movie.
“I talked to Barack about it. He told me he felt confident I had the ears for the role,” Will Smith revealed to James Corden. That wasn’t the only shocking confession of the exchange; the Independence Day and Men in Black star also revealed that he likes pineapple on pizza. I mean, he also passed up the role of Neo in the Matrix, so I guess his judgement isn’t perfect, but that’s crazy!
What say the internet, however, about the Miami and Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It singer playing Barack Obama? As you might imagine, there was a bit of a mixed reaction to the President himself, but they also feel as if Will Smith would be a decent choice to play him.
At this point, we’re still quite a way away from a Barack Obama biopic being even in the works, let alone an actor announced that will play Barack Obama. All the same, it’s good to know that should that be on the cards, we’ve already got a frontrunner to play the 44th President of the United States. Let’s hope, however, that Will Smith can refrain from rapping on this hypothetical movie. We’re still not over that awful Wild Wild West song.
