Obesity is an epidemic in the modern world. In the United States alone, two out of three men are either overweight or obese and this number is even higher for women. What’s more is that this very modern plague is showing no signs of slowing down.
Excess weight affects a person’s quality of life and their longevity, with obese people incurring $1,429 more in medical expenses annually.
A common misconception is that those who are overweight are simply greedy, but, in reality, traumatic events cause many to seek comfort in food. This was the case for John, who turned to food after his parents divorced and his father was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
At the height of his obesity, John weighed 540lbs. In fact, he was so heavy that when he went to a doctor to get weighed, he was told that the clinic’s scales were not big enough and sent to a fish market instead. He was then told that if he didn’t lose weight, he would die.
Not wanting to lose his life, John tried dieting, but absolutely nothing seemed to be working. It was only when he joined a weight-loss boot camp on Facebook that he began to lose weight. Initially frightened of the challenge, he has now lost an incredible 240lbs.
“I’ve learned so much through this journey… For me, the key was finding a community of people who are like-minded, who have goals to lose weight and eat better and be healthier, so that you’re not doing it alone,” John said.
Check out the video below to learn more about John’s dramatic transformation:
John’s wife, Caila, was thrilled by his life-saving transformation and stayed faithfully by his side throughout his journey.
“He’s amazing. He’s put in a lot of hard work and discipline. He’s endured a lot of challenges and failures but he just kept trying… and he finally found his success story,” she said.
Losing a colossal amount of weight, however, comes with its own set of problems. Many people who manage to reach a healthy weight find themselves trapped by layers of excess skin which is costly to have surgically removed.
Luckily, this won’t be a problem for John as The Doctors have arranged for plastic surgeons Michael Zarrabi and Dr. Daniel Barrett to remove his excess skin for free.
“The thing I have always wanted the most is just to be able to function and move and look like a normal person and put on clothes like a normal person… and to be able to maybe experience things like a normal person in every sense is a blessing,” John said.
We wish John all the best in his continued weight loss journey and hope that his story inspires other people to lose weight.
