Obesity is an epidemic in the modern world. In the United States alone, two out of three men are either overweight or obese and this number is even higher for women. What's more is that this very modern plague is showing no signs of slowing down.
Excess weight affects a person's quality of life and their longevity, with obese people incurring $1,429 more in medical expenses annually.
A common misconception is that those who are overweight are simply greedy, but, in reality, traumatic events cause many to seek comfort in food. This was the case for John, who turned to food after his parents divorced and his father was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
At the height of his obesity, John weighed 540lbs. In fact, he was so heavy that when he went to a doctor to get weighed, he was told that the clinic's scales were not big enough and sent to a fish market instead. He was then told that if he didn't lose weight, he would die.
Not wanting to lose his life, John tried dieting, but absolutely nothing seemed to be working. It was only when he joined a weight-loss boot camp on Facebook that he began to lose weight. Initially frightened of the challenge, he has now lost an incredible 240lbs.
