16 Black And White Photographs There’s No Logical Explanation For

The world has changed beyond recognition since the invention of photography in the 19th century. When we look at black at white pictures, it can often feel like we are peering into another time that’s far removed from all we know – even if they are of familiar places.

However, there’s some black and white photographs that suggest the past was a lot stranger than what’s recorded in the history books. We know that our ancestors had some quirky inventions and customs, but these photographs really have to be seen to be believed.

Here are 16 black and white that there is absolutely no logical explanation for…

1. Why the loving gaze? Why the heads?! We’ll never know…

2. It’s like something straight out of a horror movie…

3. Is that a giant pickle?! Why is she leaning over it? I have so many questions…

4. If only child services were around when this was taken…

In the past, photographs were usually only taken of special occasions, and for those without a lot of money that often meant that they were only photographed after they had died, or posing with a dead relative. This was known was post-mortem photography.

Whilst post-mortem photography might sound like something only the Addams Family would do, it was a common practice in nineteenth century America and Europe. The dead in these pictures were not in coffins. Instead they were positioned to look like they were still living.

5. How are they able to do that?! You’d think they’d fall off the train…

6. This looks like pretty convincing evidence of witches…

7. Surely this isn’t what it looks like? Goldilocks, is that you?!

8. Well, that’s one way to celebrate Halloween…

The fact that photography was still in its infancy when many of these photographs were taken is testament to how bizarre they are. If you knew that only a few photographs of you were ever going to be taken in your life, why on Earth would you make them as strange as these ones?!

Whilst these photographs are most commonly referred to as being “black and white” another name for this type of picture is “monochrome” photography since these pictures are technically only made up of different shades of grey.

9. There’s no way that axe was left there by accident…

10. How is that cat able to stay on top of that helmet?!

11. I’ve heard of dog fighting before, but never this…

12. There’s no explanation for this, but it certainly looks like fun…

We are so used to seeing the world in color these days that we forget that black and white photographs were commonplace up until the 1970s. Whilst color photography did exist in the early twentieth century, it wasn’t affordable for us Average Joes until then.

Another fun fact about black and white pictures is that they’re said to be more emotional than those which are in color. Supposedly, color acts as a distraction from the emotion of a picture…

13. We can only hope that this gun wasn’t loaded…

14. It’s amazing that something this bizarre was captured by an early camera…

15. And we think our pet selfies are impressive…

16. This looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie…

These photographs will continue to fascinate and perplex generations for years to come. In the days before cameras were everywhere, people mostly took photographs to remember special occasions and that’s what makes these pictures so disturbingly unforgettable.
