We all have skeletons in our closet – it’s all part of growing up. We learn from our mistakes and make a conscious effort never to repeat them.
For those who were young in the early noughties, it’s likely that some of your biggest mistakes played out online. Still naive to the internet’s power, we all fell victim to its cruel ebbs and flows at some point or another as we tried to navigate the murky waves of social media.
MySpace and MSN were breeding grounds for cringe-worthy behavior. It was a time of selfie experimentation, photo editing fails, juvenile profile designs (which often didn’t reflect our true selves) and over-enthusiastic bios – in which, we shared far too many details about our lives.
For those who joined social media after the demise of MySpace (around 2008/9), there has never been anything else to quite compare. By that point, streamlined social media platforms such as Facebook were introduced and experimental sites such as MySpace were left behind as teens tried to forge a new online image for themselves – one that didn’t include leopard print hair dye, sweeping fringes, mirror selfies, guys in eyeliner, Hello Kitty and song lyrics edited over the top of sultry snaps.
But in our haste to jump to Facebook and start fresh, we all forgot to delete the version of ourselves on MySpace. With over one billion accounts still registered to the site (several of which are unbelievably still active!), there is a nostalgic mass of #ThrowbackThursdays just waiting to be rediscovered.
Whilst for a large majority of us, it’s only potential future employers who may stumble upon our old profiles, for celebrities, it’s the whole world. Desperate to get a glimpse of their favorite stars before fame, fans have long been stalking through the World Wide Web for a trace of their old social media profiles.
To feel instantly old, take a look at this video to have an instant throwback…
For those not smart enough to delete their old account, its discovery can become one of the biggest moments in their career. Just think about Tom Hardy who was embarrassingly exposed when his old MySpace was unearthed (see the pictures in question below).
So, with that in mind, here are 11 celebrities who we bet wish they had been a little more careful with their online footprint…
1. Kendall Jenner
To be fair, Kendall Jenner has practically lived her whole life in the spotlight. When her family shot to fame with their reality television show Keeping Up With The Kardashians in 2007, Kendall wasn’t even a teenager.
There has been no respite for the 22-year-old supermodel, who has grown up acutely aware of how to behave whilst in the public eye. So a glimpse of her old MySpace profile, no matter how bare, is an interesting slice of Kendall’s early life – for example, would you expect Kendall of today to name her profile “horsegirlkj”?
2. Lana Del Ray
Before Lana Del Rey became the global pop star that she is today, she was simply known as Lizzy Grant. Peddling her music on MySpace, Grant was desperate to be a star. This determination, combined with her cooky attitude, would see Grant breakthrough into the music industry in 2011 when she adopted the stage name we all know today, Lana Del Rey.
With this newfound popularity came a lot of fan interest in Del Rey’s life, and so as is customary in this scenario, here old MySpace account was picked to pieces. Old photographs of the singer were unearthed, appearing to show that she’d had a considerable amount of plastic surgery before hitting the big time.
In addition, several quirky elements of her MySpace profile came back to haunt her. Such as her love of Britney Spears and “morphine” – two things that aren’t usually associated with one another!
3. Kylie Jenner
It’s easy to think that Kylie Jenner is a fully fledged adult these days, but the California-born reality star is very much a child. At just 20 years old, she was barely present for the whole social media revolution, which is shocking when you consider the fact that she now dominates Instagram and Snapchat.
At just 16-years-old, her MySpace profile seems to suggest that she was already experimenting with photo editing software to alter her appearance. Not only that, but it also shows her youth with the profile name “kyliesalollypop” not quite fitting with her present Instagram influencer theme!
4. Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift’s MySpace profile holds many embarrassing photographs of the singer before she became one of the biggest stars on the planet. Luckily, the 28-year-old star can just Shake It Off…
From cringe-worthy old photographs in which she experimented with her look, to lengthy notes in which she shared her deepest feelings – maybe MySpace could be credited for helping her develop her songwriting skills?
Here is an example of her rather juvenile need to share every detail of her personal life, as extracted from her MySpace profile by BuzzFeed:
Deep, huh? It’s hard to relate to this younger version of Taylor now that she’s released Reputation. Are the two girls even the same person?
5. Harry Styles
Ah, Harry Styles. The cool kid on the block, in his Gucci suits and his arms peppered with quirky tattoos. It’s hard to believe that he was every once ordinary. Surely Harry has always been a cooky kid?
Well, no, not exactly. If his MySpace profile is anything to go by, 14-year-old Harry Styles was your average chap. In fact, so average that it’s hard to believe he has become one of the world’s biggest stars.
Before being discovered on The X Factor and thrown into the band One Direction, Harry was just a regular kid who took mirror selfies and went on family holidays.
He was even once a user of a webcam filter, something you probably wouldn’t catch him doing today. If you were to browse through your friend’s list on Facebook, it’s likely that you could find hundreds of boys just like Harry…
It’s hard to remember a time when Rihanna wasn’t a thing. For the past decade, the Barbadian beauty has dominated the music charts and pages of fashion magazines, but back in 2006, things were quite different for the star…
Using MySpace to promote her music, Rihanna was a long way away from being top of the pops. This old way of self-promotion is a stark contrast to today where Rihanna has a whole team dedicated to releasing her albums which go on to sell millions of copies.
But possibly the biggest sign of how much times have changed is this comment left by a fan, who was hoping to see their idol performing at a mall. Can you imagine that today? Rihanna performing at a mall, now we have really seen it all…
7. Katy Perry
Katy Perry has always been a quirky artist, so it’s little surprise that her old MySpace account is peppered with cooky pictures and words…
Now here is a true throwback for anyone familiar with MySpace from back in the day: a facts list. For some reason, we were all obsessed with writing out excruciatingly boring facts about our lives. Everyone did it, even Katy Perry…
Don’t you feel better for knowing all of that about Katy Perry? No mention of how she likes kissing girls though!
8. Kim Kardashian
It’s of absolutely no surprise that Kim Kardashian’s MySpace profile name was “kimsaprincess”. Some things never change…
Kim’s last used her account shortly before the sex tape of her and boyfriend-at-the-time, Ray J, went viral. It was the moment that completely transformed the California-born star’s life, and now her social media accounts are followed by over 100 million people. Some things do change, after all.
Oh, and talking of Ray J, here he is in Kim’s friend’s list along with her elder sister Kourtney, brother Rob and stepbrother, Brody Jenner.
Kesha may have toned down her wild child side, but there is still a permanent trace of it online and in her early music. Take a look at her MySpace profile and you’ll see what I mean…
10. Tom Hardy
When Tom Hardy’s old MySpace photos were published by BuzzFeed in 2015, nobody thought he could come back from it. However, the Dark Knight Rises star didn’t seem concerned about the exposé…
When asked about it by Sky News, Hardy simply responded: “I’ve got no shame about my MySpace photos, especially the one of me in my underpants, which is a glorious photo of a man in his natural habitat.”
“In America, they say, ‘You should be ashamed of this,’ but I’m actually not remotely ashamed – that is me in my natural habitat, thank you,” he continued.
“[I] might not be an Adonis, but I like to think of myself as an Adonis in that photo,” he concluded, clearly unabashed by the embarrassing blip in his career.
11. Justin Bieber
Last but by no means least, Justin Bieber. Bieber formed his whole career off the back of self-promotion online, so it’s no surprise that there are traces of his old MySpace account all over the World Wide Web.
Bieber’s plans to “travel the world spreading the word of God” has clearly been long forgotten, but he really does still “love singing a lot.”
So there you have it, the celebrity MySpace profiles that they never intended for you to see now that they are superstars. What do you think? Are they as embarrassing as yours? More so or less so?
